Tour of the Gila - NEUSA, May 2-7, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - May 3: Silver City - Mogollon Road Race, 94/73 milesTop domestic riders battling in New MexicoO'Neill expands lead after TT winThe Tour of the Gila men's race began on Wednesday with a fierce battle with a sixteen mile time trial, won handily by Heath Net-Maxxis' Nathan O'Neill ahead of Ben Jacques-Maynes (Priority Health) and Chris Baldwin (Toyota-United). In today's first road stage, Hernan Muņoz (P&S-Halcones) took the win with O'Neill finishing second, putting another 25 seconds between him and the new second place general classification rider, Baldwin. "I haven't climbed like this in years," O'Neill said after the race. "When I was in Europe, I was pretty handy on the climbs, but racing here is a bit different and you train differently." O'Neill is coming off a strong Tour de Georgia where he finished fourth on the epic Brasstown Bald stage. The tough parcours on what race promoter Jack Brennan says is a "racer's race" definitely requires special attention, and today's opening road stage showed just that. The constant up-and-down wore on the peloton, softening the legs before a biting final uphill finish climb. O'Neill was able to keep the race in hand thanks to his minute-plus advantage on the rest of the field, easily keeping tabs on threatening riders like Scott Moninger (BMC), Anthony Colby (Colavita-Sutter Home) and Andy Bajadali (Jelly Belly). The pressure was still present though, with Jelly Belly driving the pack at the bottom of the final ascent and Toyota-United taking over next. "When Stevic came back from the break, he got right on the front of the group and just drilled it," Baldwin said. "It put everybody behind him in trouble while Burke [Swindlehurst] and I pretty much got a free ride." The cream continues to rise to the top, with riders like O'Neill, Jacques-Maynes and Baldwin the only ones to keep pace. Eventual stage winner Muņoz was also present, but more than three minutes behind O'Neill on the overall. "I knew I had three minutes on Muņoz, so I let him go a bit," O'Neill said about Colombian's solo move out of a final lead group that contained only O'Neill and Baldwin. With Baldwin unable to respond, O'Neill also rode away, putting the 25 additional seconds on the new second place overall. However, the racing is far from over, with the infamous Gila Monster stage finishing the racing on Sunday. But O'Neill is confident: "I'm feeling pretty good about where we are right now. We have six really strong guys here, and we rode like a machine today. If we lose this race, it won't be because of the team. It will be from bad luck."
