55th FBD Insurance Rás - 2.2Ireland, May 20-27, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Next Stage Stage 1 - May 20: Naas – Templemore, 158 kmOjavee beats O'Brien into TemplemoreBy Shane Stokes in Templemore Estonian rider Mart Ojavee and Irishman Paídi O'Brien got their FBD Insurance Rás campaigns off to a good start on Sunday when they placed first and second on the 157 kilometre opening leg from Naas to Templemore. The Kalev Chocolate team rider was quickest in a flat-out 119 man sprint to the line, just edging out Murphy and Murphy & Gunn-Newlyn-M. Donnelly-Sean Kelly rider O'Brien and Petr Pucelik (Czech Republic Sparta Praha) for the victory and first yellow jersey of the eight day race. Dominique Rollin (Kodak Gallery Sierra Nevada) finished just off the podium, while former world junior champion Mark Scanlon (Ireland Subway Eat Fresh) rode encouragingly well despite a lack of racing this season, netting fifth. O'Brien was happy with his ride, saying that having team-mate Simon Kelly in the day's breakaway took the pressure off. "We were happy enough for that move to stay away," he said. "When it became clear that the break was coming back, Kurt [Bogaerts, team manager] said that we would do the sprint for me and Glenn Bak..he is also fast. "With a kilometre to go Stephen Gallagher got me into a good position. Mark Cassidy was already far up in the bunch so he got me closer to the front and I did the sprint from there. I was happy to have that good position. "It's hard to say if I would have won if the line was a bit further away. I was coming from far back but I couldn't really see him [Ojavee] - I was concentrating on my own sprint. But I am happy enough to be up in the podium." O'Brien said that the Belgian-based Irish pro team will chase both stage wins and the overall classification this week. The stage was marked by a long distance breakaway featuring six riders - Andrei Mustonen (Kalev Chocolate ), Ricardo Van der Velde (Netherlands National Team U23), Simon Kelly (Ireland - Murphy and Murphy & Gunn-Newlyn-M. Donnelly-Sean Kelly), Michael Johansen (Vision Bikes ), Jesse Anthony (US Kodak Gallery Sierra Nevada) and Ondrej Pavek (Czech Republic Sparta Praha). They went clear in the first five kilometres, built a maximum lead of approximately four minutes before the day's sole categorised climb of The Cut and resisted the efforts of several others to bridge across, including Dermot Nally of the Ireland Subway Eat Fresh team. However they were hauled back inside the final ten kilometres, paving the way for the mass sprint. American rider Jesse Anthony won a stage of the M. Donnelly Junior Tour of Ireland four years ago and said he was happy to be back racing on these shores. "I felt good riding in the break. I wasn't sure if it was going to stay away...it took us a good while to get a gap, but then when the lead went up we had a chance. But it is never easy for a break like that in a long race like this where there are a lot of guys behind...it is the first stage, too, and everyone is psyched." He was first to the top of the day's climb and takes the pink king of the mountains jersey. Van der Velde was also climbing well, crossing the summit in second place. He said afterwards that he was hoping for a good overall showing in the race. "We will decide after two days who will lead the team - it depends on who is best in the overall," he stated. "I think I am one of the good ones because I am strong uphill. We have another good rider Yvo [Kusters], who was fifth today. We will see. I like the mountains here." Meath MyHome.ie BDBC rider Eugene Moriarty also got onto the podium, placing 15th in the sprint and being the first Irish county team rider home. "I actually died a death with about 500 metres to go. Up until then I thought the top three was a possibility. So I am delighted to get another piece of crystal for the Cuchulainn [county rider] award." How it unfoldedAt just after midday 144 riders rolled out of Naas for the start of the 2007 FBD Insurance Rás. They faced 157 kilometres in the saddle en route to Templemore, including the second category climb of The Cut and one lap of a finishing circuit. Temperatures were approximately 17 degrees, with sunlight and periods of slightly overcast conditions alternating throughout the day. The first of three hot spot sprints lay in waiting after just 11.7 kilometres, ensuring a fast and aggressive start. After just a couple of kilometres of racing Andrei Mustonen (Kalev Chocolate) attacked, and was joined by Ricardo Van der Velde (Netherlands National Team U23), Simon Kelly (Ireland - Murphy and Gunn/Newlyn Group/M. Donnelly Sean Kelly), Michael Johansen (Vision Bikes) and Jesse Anthony (US Kodak Gallery Sierra Nevada). Ondrej Pavek (Czech Republic Sparta Praha) got across a few kilometres after. Mustonen won the bonus sprint in Newbridge, beating Van der Velde and Anthony, then the break continued to knuckle down as they passed the flat plains of the Curragh, location for some of the filming of Braveheart. Dermot Nally (Ireland) and Glenn Bak (Ireland - Murphy and Gunn/Newlyn Group/M. Donnelly Sean Kelly) tried to get across but while they closed to twelve seconds of the break, they couldn't get any closer. Other efforts to bridge by riders such as multiple Canadian national champion Mark Walters (Kodak Gallery Sierra Nevada) and Rory Wyley (Tipperary Dan Morrissey) were also unsuccessful. The main field was also trying to keep tabs on the leaders but a big stall after approximately 30 kilometres of racing saw the gap extend to 55 seconds. This jumped to 1'15 after an hour in the saddle Dominique Perras (Kelly Benefit Strategies) set off in pursuit and after a few solo kilometres, was joined by Martyn Irvine (Ireland) and Roger Aiken (Armagh Big Picture Development). They were approximately 1 minute 30 seconds back when Van der Velde beat Pavek and Kelly to win the second hot spot sprint in the town of Mountmellick (51.1 kilometres), and the gap had grown to two minutes by the foot of the day's sole categorised climb, The Cut. The peloton was 3'50 down here. Johansen attacked the leading group heading towards the summit. He was caught and passed by US under 23 cyclo-cross champion Anthony, who took the combined prime and hot spot sprint at the top ahead of Van der Velde and Johansen. Behind, Irvine was dropped by Perras and Aiken but the duo were not making any real gains in their chase. After the top of the climb they were 1 minute and 50 seconds, while the front of the fragmenting peloton was 2 minutes 47 seconds down. Aiken duly sat up and went back to the bunch, while Perras persisted for a while longer. Sensing the possibility of a bunch finish, several teams including Ireland, FRF Couriers and Recycling.co.uk started ramping up the pace behind. This had the effect of cutting the gap down to 1'16 by the time the riders hit the line in Templemore for the start of the 25.4 kilometre finishing circuit. With approximately 15 kilometres to go the gap had fallen to 30 seconds, prompting Johansen, Mustonen and Anthony to jump clear of the others in a last-gasp attempt to stay clear. However their move was ended just before the ten kilometre to go board. Several riders tried to get clear on the final run in to the finish, including Alain Van der Velde (Netherlands National Team U23), but there was no denying a bunch sprint. Mart Ojavee (Kalev Chocolate) proved quickest in the final dash for the line, beating Paídi O'Brien (Murphy and Gunn/Newlyn Group/ M.Donnelly Sean Kelly team), Petr Pucelik (Czech Republic Sparta Praha), Dominique Rollin (Kodak Gallery Sierra Nevada) and Mark Scanlon (Ireland Subway Eat Fresh) in the 119 man sprint to the line. That earned the Estonian team the first yellow jersey of the race, while Van der Velde's strong performances in the bonus sprints saw him end the day three seconds back in second overall. O'Brien is just one second further back in the general classification heading
into the second stage, a lumpy 147 kilometres from Templemore to Loughrea. Three
categorised ascents lie in wait; the cat. two Curreeney Cross, plus the third
cat. Lecarrow and Killamena climbs. Results1 Mart Ojavee (Est) Kalev Chocolate 3.52.44 (40.48 km/h) 2 Paidi O'Brien (Irl) Murphy & Gunn-Newlyn-M.
