Shirley steals memorial victory

The focus for the epic final day looked set to be a battle of the strong teams of Health Net and Jittery Joe's, however, an early move of eight riders got away only six miles into the race and neither team were represented. The break included Matt Winstead and Sam Silvey (both Juris/morepartnerincome.com), who would eventually get away from the other six riders and put some serious pressure on main field.

Herring Gas also had two riders in the break while Melting Pot, Priority Health, Capri Foundation, Hincapie/Bianchi each had one rider in the mix. The break would eventually build a lead of six minutes until the field started to get nervous and the chase began in earnest led by Health Net, Jittery Joe's, and Krystal.

The 113 mile course would take the riders up the three mile climb into Spencer, Tennessee twice and it was on the first time up the ascent that Winstead and Silvey attacked and shattered the breakaway group in a long-shot bid for a stage win and even a shot at yellow.

Silvey and Winstead come over the top of the climb on their own, still with a four minute lead and 30 miles to go. Behind the pair Caesar Grajales (Jittery Joe's) made life miserable for the rest of the field, attacking up the climb and taking 90 seconds out of the leaders by the top.

After a mechanical resulted in Silvey falling out of the two man break, Winstead rode valiantly alone but was ultimately caught 10 miles from the final climb after being away for over 100 miles. The main field was together leading into the final climb on the day until a small group of the strongest climbers separated themselves.

Frank Pipp (HealthNet/Maxxis) attacked on the final climb to take the stage win and finished with Neal Shirley (Jittery Joe's), and Todd Henrickson (AEG-Toshiba) followed by Grajales, just seven seconds back. Shirley put enough time into yellow jersey wearer John Murphy to take the overall GC win with Pipp taking second from Murphy.

Karl Menzies took the green sprinter's jersey by virtue of his breakaway win in the criterium.
