Stage 2 - March 16: Abrantes - Cartaxo, 187 km
Hunter captures the stage and overall
South African Robbie Hunter took the win from a furious bunch sprint in the second stage of the Volta ao Santarém in Cartaxo, Portugal. Hunter benefited from the hard work of the Benfica team of stage one winner Javier Benitez, who kept control of the bunch all day to protect their overall leader. But Benfica couldn't stop the Barloworld sprinter, and Hunter took the stage and the overall lead of the race thanks to the time bonus.
146 riders lined up for stage two of Santarém. The only nonstarter was Thomas Rhoregger (Elk Haus), and the first action came just five kilometres into the stage ahead of the first sprint bonus. Stage one winner Javier Benitez (Benfica) took the points ahead of Robert Hunter (Barloworld) and Bruno Neves (La MSS).
Benitez' Benfica squad controlled the many attacks for the first half of the stage, but let Hugo Sabido (Barloworld) slip away for the second sprint bonus. Sabido took that ahead of Robert Hunter (Barloworld) and Nuno Marta (Madeinox), and once Benfica let go of the reigns, a group of four escaped.
Amets Txurrka (Euskaltel), Emilien Berges (Agritubel), Jose Torres (Barbot) and Hernani Broco (Liberty) stretched their lead to just over three minutes. At the only KOM of the day, Txurruka went over first in front of Torres and Broco, and then the gap to the field began quickly falling as Benfica took control once more. Torres nabbed a bonus sprint on the run-in to the finish, but as the break was brought back to within a minute of the field, Berges attacked in a last-ditch attempt to stay clear with 10km to go.
Broco made an attempt to bridge to the Agritubel rider, but within 5km to go, it was over for all of the escapees, and once again, the finish came down to a mass bunch sprint. This time, Robbie Hunter (Barloworld) got the win ahead of Australian Christopher Sutton (Cofidis) and Rony Martias (Bouygues Telecom).
