Stage 1 - March 15: Fátima - Torres Novas, 206.5 km

Benitez edges Hunter for stage win

Javier Benitez of the Professional Continental team Benfica won the first stage of the Volta ao Santarém, triumphing over South African Robbie Hunter in a big bunch sprint. The first stage from Fátima to Torres Novas played out like most of the early season stage races, with a small early breakaway gaining big time before the sprinters teams hunted them down. The break of Torsten Hiekmann (Gerolsteiner), Célio Sousa (Riberalves) and Sergio Sousa (Madeinox) gained a maximum of 14'45 after escaping early in the stage, but was slowly brought back over the second half of the 206.5km stage. The break was caught after having spent 134km in front, and a counter-attack of Dennis Van Winden (Rabobank) and Steven Cozza (Slipstream) split from the field inside the last 10km. The escape was short-lived, and the peloton brought them back with 2km to go. Benitez rocketed to the line ahead of Hunter and Rabobank's Tom Veelers.
