Redlands Bicycle Classic - NECalifornia, USA, March 22-25, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 3 - March 25: Sunset Road Race, 146.5/105.8km (M/W)Bajadali and Neben win the overallDéjà-vu for SutherlandBy Kirsten Robbins in Redlands, California Health Net's Australian opportunist Rory Sutherland took his second breakaway sprint in as many days through the Citrus Avenue finish of downtown Redlands. Only a break of 12 riders completed the final hot laps of the Sunset loop and Sutherland came roaring to the finish line ahead of Navigators' Ben Brooks and Toyota-United's Chris Wherry. Andrew Bajadali (Jelly Belly) doubled his jersey collection, stealing the overall win from Scott Moninger (BMC Racing) after the race split to pieces on the undulating circuit. The Jelly Belly leader also accumulated enough points to leapfrog into first place in the mountains competition. Bajadali has twice finished in the top ten at Redlands in previous years and was beaming on the podium's top spot this time around. "It was epic and I loved the attacking and the aggressive racing," he admitted. "I've done well before here in the past and it suits my abilities being an up and down course. I've been on the back burner as far as results go and Jelly Belly deserved to have this GC win." The separation happened on the first lap where the field shattered into several groups. "I was following wheels into the break when it happened," Bajadali said. "Toyota-United put Baldwin and Wherry in the break and they were just waiting for England their top placed GC rider and others to bridge up but they never did. We saw them coming at some point on the hill and they were only 30 seconds back but we put in a big dig and they never made it." BMC rallied at the front of the chase group, reducing that gap considerably with four laps to go. Navigator's Phil Zajicek then leapt across to the break in less that one lap and was only sitting ten seconds behind Bajadali on GC, meaning that the overall winner could be decided on time bonuses awarded at the finish. Health Net's Tim Johnson also managed to bridge across to the break with two others, providing Sutherland with more support in the closing stages. The gap from the break to the chase group increased to more than two minutes before the five finishing circuits. Race organisation stopped the chase group from entering the circuit and the break was set for a showdown. "In the circuits there were two and three to go and Phil Zajicek had a good gap but neither him or Ben Jacques-Maynes gave up," said Bajadali. "They rode hard all the way to the end to try to gain time for the overall." Zajicek made several attempts to gain time on Bajadali but the Jelly Belly leader proved too strong and held the group together. "Everyone knew that BMC was vulnerable so the race was aggressive from the start," said Zajicek. "Health Net was definitely in it for the stage win and Bajadali was just super strong today. I tried to get a gap during the circuits but he was just too strong today. Today was real aggressive bike racing all round." Health Net's stage winner Rory Sutherland had no trouble winning the Citrus Avenue sprint for the second day in a row. "It is complicated to get the right spot coming into the finish of the circuit," Sutherland admitted. "I really did not want to be the one in the break today because it is such a long way to go and it is a hard race. I wasn't feeling good for the first 80 kilometres but by the end I started to get a lot better and gain confidence." Sutherland added, "Toyota-United were the aggressors today because we didn't have anyone high enough on GC so it was never our responsibility. Toyota-United really wanted to break it up and put Moninger in trouble but unfortunately England couldn't get across." Rock Racing's Kayle Leogrande finished the tough circuit race to retain the sprinter's jersey. Anderson takes SunsetThe selective, undulating circuit also took its toll in the women's race as T-Mobile's Kim Anderson won a four-up sprint from Mara Abbot (Webcor) and Amber Neben (STAHL/SC Velo) with TEAm Lipton rider Kori Seehafer crashing around the final corner as the others sprinter beside her. Seehafer solidified the green jersey she won in yesterday's criterium and held onto her fourth place in the stage due to the officials' one kilometre ruling. Stage winner Anderson explained her tactics in the finale, saying, "I tried to jump but Kori came in super fast through the first corner so I backed off. When she hit the second corner she just washed out which was awful. Everyone was going from the point where I had jumped and we all just stayed where we were coming to the line." Ina-Yoko Teutenberg (T-Mobile) and Felica Gomez (Aaron's) looked to have made the decisive break after the duo split from the peloton and worked well to build up a lead. "I had the wrong partner in the break," admitted Teutenberg. "I knew the field wasn't going to let me go with Felica because she was so high up on GC. At least it kept the pressure off my teammates. "I counter attacked Katheryn Curi at the top of the second climb and Felicia was right on my wheel. In the end it was great that Kim won the race and that we didn't come up short. We have been getting fit in the March races here and are ready to go over to Europe to compete there." Seehafer was arguably the most aggressive rider in the bunch and initiated the break that stuck to the end. A massive attack from Seehafer and T-Mobile's Oenone Wood on the descent forced race leader Amber Neben and Mara Abbott into action and the two bridged up to Seehafer. Shortly after, Anderson joined the three riders. Anderson and Seehafer were caught between the cross-fire of the two star studded climbers in their battle for the overall but never let them out of their sights. "I didn't actually bridge to the break," Anderson admitted. "It was more like Amber and Mara were watching each other and Kori and I were able to catch up to them at our own pace. Kori was helping a lot and on the last climb they stopped attacking each other and I pulled all the way down the hill." Race winner Amber Neben was thrilled to have won her second Redlands in a row, saying, "It is fantastic to win Redlands again and I am really excited. It is a great way for me to start the year and it's fun because it's so close to home." Neben noted that having Anderson and Seehafer in the break kept the speeds high enough to make it to the end in front of the field. "There were numerous attacks today and Webcor had the numbers to play," Neben said. "I even threw in a few attacks just to keep things fun. I committed myself to being out there in the break and tried to ride hard a little bit. Mara was attacking me through the climbs but I was not necessarily interested in have us attack each other all day." Neben added, "I knew Kori and Kim were close behind and it was fine for me if they came up to us. Kori and Kim were racing for the stage. I wasn't going to ride hard if Mara wasn't going to ride hard. So we all rode to the finish and it was unfortunate that Kori crashed coming into the last corner because she rode really well today." Neben retained her 30-second lead over Abbott in the end. However, Abbott kept her second placing overall and the Queen of the Mountains jersey.
