Redlands Bicycle Classic - NECalifornia, USA, March 22-25, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 1 - March 23: Oak Glen Road Race, 155.6/115.2km (M/W)Moninger's preparation pays offBy Kirsten Robbins in Redlands, California With one kilometre remaining on today's final climb to Oak Glen, just five men were left. And the last two of those standing were BMC's Scott Moninger and Toyota-United's Justin England. It was a tactical effort with 800 metres to go and in the end Moninger won the two-up sprint. Colavita/Sutter Home's Anthony Colby climbed into the third spot on the podium. BMC's director sportif Gavin Chilcott was understandably pleased with his new team's early season performance. "What we saw was a result of good team work and of a guy, Scott Moninger, who really knows how to prepare and set the standard of preparation on every level - from the season over, all down to the given day," said Chilcott. "A course like this was won on physiological demand and we saw the benefits of that, not to mention that he is a fantastic athlete." There were two significant breaks in the men's 157-kilometre road race, beginning in Redlands and finishing at the top of Oak Glen. The first break of four riders included Toyota-United's Ivan Dominguez who swallowed up all of the day's sprint points to claim the sprinter's jersey. The break was gradually brought back through the climbs in the last half of the stage. Davide Frattini (Colavita/Sutter Home) counter attacked over the third climb and soon after Sean Sullivan (Toyota-United) bridged across to him. The duo worked well together gaining a one minute gap but were caught up Oak Glen with five kilometres to the finish. "Having Sullivan in the break was great because we didn't have to work going into the last climb," said England. "Health Net lead it in to the climb. About half way up the climb the group of five, Moninger, myself plus Jelly Belly Andrew Bajadali, Navigators' Phil Zijicek and Colavita/Sutter Home's Anthony Colby split off with four kilometres to go. In the last kilometre guys a started to attack and with 800 metres to go I hit it and Scott followed me. "We had a gap and we were pretty even in strength, neither was stronger than the other. I started the sprint and Moninger got around at the line." A crash over Lambs Canyon Road ended Jittery Joe's Cesar Grajales race at the Redlands Classic. Grajales was sitting in third place overall after yesterday's prologue. Abbott out climbs NebenThe women's race ended with a cluster of Webcor-Builders' shade of green dominating the finish over Oak Glen. The team's young rider, Mara Abbott, attacked her small group of four with 400 metres to go to take the win. Overall leader Amber Neben finished in second place, just ahead of the next wave of Webcor riders Christine Thorburn and Katheryn Curi. "I had good position because we had numbers on our side," said Abbot. "We were able to sit on Amber's wheel until there were fewer and fewer riders. Amber still had to do all the pulling because Katheryn was up the road and I attacked as we caught Katheryn. I knew if Amber caught me Christine would be there to counter that." The most significant break of the 115 kilometre women's race split from the peloton over the first of three climbs up Lamb Canyon Road, nearly resulting in a win for Curi - a former US national champion. At the base of the final climb up Oak Glen, the break of seven riders had been reduced to six. The group included Tina Pic (Colavita/Sutter Home), Leigh Hobson (Cheerwine), Anne Samplonius (Expresscopy.com) and Chantel Beltman (T-Mobile). Queen of the mountains (QOM) competition leader Leigh Hobson acknowledged that Curi was the strongest in the break. "Beltman and Curi were driving the break the most," said Hobson. "Katheryn attacked at the base of the climb but no-one could go with her. The rest of the break got caught six kilometres into the climb." Webcor Builders now has three riders in the top four overall after today's epic stage. "The break got started because our plan was to be aggressive after the first QOM and we knew that we had to make Amber work," said Curi. "She is such a strong rider and we couldn't wait until the base of the climb or we would be in trouble." Curi attacked the field bringing with her Beltman, Gabriella de Ferrat (Bicycle John's) and Brenda Lyons (TEAm Lipton). The remaining riders in the break bridged across to Curi at later times. "Before the second QOM we lost Gabby and Brenda," continued Curi. " So it was down to five of us and we were working well together and I was pushing it through the QOMs to make Amber chase." With 15 kilometres to go Curi sat on the break to rest for the finale up Oak Glen. Behind her Amber Neben put the pressure on with a small group that contained Dostie Bausch (Colavita/Sutter Home), Christine Thorburn and Mara Abbott. This climbing group caught what was left of the break except for Curi with two kilometres to the finish. Abbott attacked the small group with two kilometres to go and held off Neben's charge for the win. "Amber didn't chase Mara right away but instead she just increased the pressure," explained Curi. "Christine was having trouble with cramping and she couldn't hang on to Amber's wheel." PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Mitch Clinton/www.clintonphoto.com
