The Killer, Danilo Di Luca, has taken the oldest of the Italian races, the 92nd Milano-Torino. The 31 year-old rider launched a move on the Colle di Superga with help from his strong Liquigas team, who kept an iron-grip on the day. It was his first win of 2007 and comes after two victories by the team's other leader, Filippo Pozzato, who won last weekend's Belgian Semi-Classic Het Volk.

"I am in good form and my team did really well to support me here in Milano-Torino," Di Luca said to Alessandra De Stefano of Rai. "I wanted to do something today." What did he think of his Colombian breakaway partner Mauricio Soler of Barloworld, who came second? "Well, I know he has improved a lot as a rider, but he was still a little sketchy on the descent," said Di Luca.

The riders kicked off the race from near Milano, in Novate Milanese, and sped across sunny Lombardia and Piemonte; the 17°C sunny climes were a stark contrast to the snow of previous years. The parcours, mostly flat, did not rear its head until the Superga, topping out at 620 metres and 15 kilometres to go to the finish on Corso Casale.

Liquigas were setting up the race for Di Luca, who only a few days ago claimed that it was still too early in the season to test his legs. Fans were given a treat when Alessandro Spezialetti attacked to ready a move for his teammate. Di Luca went and only Colombian Mauricio Soler (Barloworld) could keep hold.

The Italian-Colombian duo traded turns on the 10 kilometres to the summit. Only an attack by Andrei Kunitski (Acqua & Sapone-Caffè Mokambo) was able to reach the two, but the Bulgarian rider ill-timed his efforts and blew before the summit.

Di Luca and Soler topped the Superga together (with 20 seconds on the chasers) and began the nasty descent, the same Pino Torinese descent that knocked Marco Pantani out of action a few years ago. The Italian from Abruzzo led the nervous looking Colombian on the run-in to Torino while at the back of the peloton there was a scare.

World Champion Paolo Bettini (Quickstep-Innergetic) took a spill while trying to keep up with Mirko Celestino (Milram). Luckily, Il Grillo came away with only scrapes and a bruised ego. Celestino is notably sharpening his axe for March 24, when he hopes to use the same descending skills on the Poggio to win Milano-Sanremo.

The sprint was a tight affair; with the peloton closing in behind, Di Luca could not take any chances. He out-gunned Soler on the Corso Casale to take his 38th career win, right outside of the velodrome in which the race used to finish. Behind, by nine seconds, the sprint was taken by Kim Kirchen (T-Mobile) over an in-form Stuart O'Grady (Team CSC).
