Central Valley Classic - NECalifornia, USA, March 9-11, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 3 - March 11: Tower District Criterium, 80/60 mins (M/W)Jacques-Maynes and Thorburn bring home the overallBy Kirsten Robbins in Fresno, California Vogels wins the final stageThe final stage of the Central Valley Classic presented a showdown between Priority Health and Health Net for the overall and fight for the last corner amongst the sprinters. In the end it was Toyota-United's Henk Vogels scooping up the bunch sprint from Colavita/Sutter Home's Alejandro Acton and Successful Living's Ricardo Escuela. Ben Jacques-Maynes (Priority Health) held on to the leaders jersey but not with out a street brawl from Health Net's Rory Sutherland in second place. "Rory made a really good move and put us on the defensive," overall race winner Jacques-Maynes said. "We never expect anyone on Health Net to go down with out a good fight. My team was awesome." A large group of twelve riders split form the front of the peloton half way into the eighty-minute criterium. The group included two Kodak Sierra-Nevada, Toyota-United, Colavita/Sutter Home, Priority Health, and BMC riders. It was brought back with fifteen minutes left of the race, in time for another group of four to snap away in a last chance attempt at stage victory. The second break included Kodak Sierra-Nevada's Canadian national road champion Dominique Rollin, Health Net, Colavita/Sutter Home and Priority Health. "The race was really aggressive," Jacques-Maynes said. "My team was always at the front and there were only a few times I had to jump to close remaining gaps to the break. But it wouldn't be a bike race if we didn't have to work hard for it." Colavita/Sutter Home organized five riders at the front to set up their Argentinian sprinter Alejandro Acton. The break was reeled back with one lap to go and teams Toyota-United and Kodak Sierra Nevada called their cavalry to the front in a last effort for a stage win. "We caught my teammate Davide and the small break he was in with two laps to go," Acton said. "We had four riders left to help with the lead out and they worked to bring me to the sprint. Toyota-United attacked on the last lap and I made sure I followed Vogels. Before the last corner I attacked on the inside from third position but my corner was not that good and Vogels came around with a lot more speed. I'm happy with the second place today." Jacques-Maynes and his Priority Health teammates became less anxious once the break was brought back. "We could see the other teams were motivated to ride the breaks back and for it to be a field sprint," Jacques-Maynes said while enjoying a congratulatory burrito on the road trip home. "We just had to keep it up right even though coming into the last lap my rear tire went a little flat and I just rode it flat across the line." Pic wins two for twoThe women's race ended in a bunch sprint with Colavita/Sutter Home presented by Cooking Light winning the bunch sprint against T-Mobile's Suzanne de Goede and Team Lipton's Kori Seehafer. Webcor Builders Christine Thorburn cruised through today's fifty-minute criterium and safely brought home the leaders jersey while her teammate Katheryn Curi held on to third. Colavita/Sutter Home presented by Cooking Light's Dotsie Bausch remained in second. "Our priority was to keep the overall, keep Katheryn on the podium and try to get Laura Yoisten a stage win," a tall order from the former Olympian and overall race winner. "I thought it was a really fun criterium today and I was pretty relaxed because the team did such a great job from the start. I wasn't ever too concerned because we didn't have to gain time, all I had to do was not lose any time so we just had to keep it together." Attacks flew off the front from the first lap, but the persistently high speeds brought everything back with in a lap or two. "We would have been happy with certain breaks," Thorburn said. "Though I've never seen a break succeed to the finish on that course. We were monitoring the breaks to make sure there were no threats but we weren't bringing them all back." T-Mobile made a strong presence at the front with one lap to go for their sprinter Suzanne de Goede, while Team Lipton and Colavita/Sutter Home keyed off of them. "It was really aggressive today and there is just no such thing as pedaling around any more, there was non-stop at attacking until five laps to go," said Dotsie Bausch. "Aaron's and Lipton were pushing because they had nothing to lose. They were aggressive from start to finish." Bausch added, "T-Mobile gave Suzanne a solid lead out. In the last corner Tina and Suzanne were fighting for the last corner and Tina let her have it because it became a little sketchy. Tina came around her in the last two hundred meters." Thorburn noted that the time trial was their main focus in the Central Valley Classic. "This is the longest time trial in any stage race and we really focused on that. Our team all round is great at time trials. Our strategy in the criterium and road race was different from other races we'll do this year in that we didn't have to worry to much about time bonuses."
