Central Valley Classic - NECalifornia, USA, March 9-11, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - March 10: Belmont - Piedra ITT, 26.4kmThorburn and Jacques-Maynes take commandBy Kirsten Robbins in Fresno, California Stage two of the Central Valley Classic was a 26.4km individual time trial running parallel to the Kings river in the foothills of the Sierras. In the women's event, the top three riders all broke 40 minutes with Webcor Builders' time trial Olympian Christine Thorburn taking first spot with a time of 39.06. Twenty-three seconds in arrears was Colavita/Sutter Home's Dotsie Bausch followed by Thorburn's teammate, former US national road champion Katheryn Curi. Despite the increase in temperature this year, the wind added an extra barrier for the riders to fight their way through and, as expected, the strongest riders came out on top. "I had a better ride this year than last year based on knowing my effort and power," said Thorburn. "There was a lot more wind this year despite being warmer so I'm not sure that it was a faster day. It has definitely been a long time since I've noticed the wind like that in a time trial." Thorburn will start tomorrow's stage three criterium wearing the leader's jersey but there are multiple opportunities for time bonuses during the event and at the finish line. "It should be a good race tomorrow but it's not like we have it wrapped up yet," Thorburn said. "There are twenty seconds worth of time bonuses in the criterium and it's amazing what a leaders jersey does to motivate you for them." The men's time trial ended in a similar fashion with first and third on the podium being swept up by the green jerseys of Priority Health. Ben Jacques-Maynes won his second stage in as many days, eight seconds ahead of Health Net's Rory Sutherland and a further eight seconds ahead of his Priority Health teammate Tom Zirbel. The top three riders displayed their time trailing prowess earlier this month in the Tour of California and repeated the show here at the Central Valley Classic. "I had a good experience with this time trial last year and I knew the course suited me well," Jacques-Maynes said. "The flat ground was great for full gas and the rollers to stretch the legs out. To come into today with a time gap was great but I know the field is awesome here and I hope to be able keep the lead." There are also twenty seconds of time bonuses available in the men's criterium, fifteen seconds for the win and a five second intermediate bonus. "I have eighteen seconds on Rory now," continued Jacques-Maynes. "If he wins the race and wins the time bonus he could also win the overall. We also can't discount the other teams here. But, I have a strong team behind me and I have confidence in them to bring home the leader's jersey. May the best man win."
