Safi-Pasta takes all

The inaugural Tour de PEI ended with the peloton strung out in a 50 kilometre criterium held in downtown Charlottetown.Diana Ziliute (Safi-Pasta) wrapped up the yellow jersey victory after teammate Giorgia Bronzini showed off her famous sprint to thousands of island fans and took the win of the final stage. Bronzini pulled away from second placed Rochelle Gilmore (Menikini-Selle Italia) and third placed Elena Novikova (Team Russia) after winding up her sprint some 150 metres out.
"I sat on my teammate Diana Ziliute's wheel so she could pull me into the sprint," said Italy's Bronzini. "Elodie Touffet (Menikini-Selle Italia) was also there to lead out Rochelle Gilmore but Diana pulled for the last lap and on the final corner I jumped to do my sprint."
Safi-Pasta took its place on the podium during every stage of the tour and in the end proved its dominance by taking home the yellow leaders jersey, the red sprint jersey and the gray point jersey. Bronzini regarded her sprint and point classification wins as a mere result of the team's focus on stage wins and the protection of Ziliute's yellow jersey.
"I did not think about winning the sprint jersey or the points jersey because I was only focused on the final sprint to win the race and to protect Diana in the leaders jersey," Bronzini said.
The Italian sprint protégé had a firm hold of the point classification before the evening criterium and made up the three points needed to take the sprint jersey away from second placed Rochelle Gilmore (Menikini - Selle Italia). The two sprinters tied with 40 points but Bronzini's stage win broke the tie.
Ziliute had a sizeable lead on GC, but any threat was removed when second placed Olivia Gollan (Menikini-Selle Italia) fell with seven laps remaining in a crash that rendered her bike-less and unable to complete the stage. Gollan had won the multiple intermediate time bonus sprints allowing her to leap in front of the third placed Alexandra Burchenkova on the general classification. Commissaries ruled on the mishap in Gollan's favour and she was able to hold on to her GC placing.
Though Italians proved to have a solid grip in the sprints it was Annette Beutler (Menikini-Selle Italia) who claimed the Queen of the Mountain competition. "There were no real climbs, they were more rolling so it was harder for me to get these points because some sprinters can go very well on these types of hills," Beutler said. "So, it was very important for me to win the jersey."
