Saunier Duval again and again

Young Saunier Duval rider Alberto Fernández de la Puebla Ramos won the first stage of the Euskal Bizikleta ahead of his team mate José Ángel Gómez Marchante and Óscar Sevilla (Relax GAM). It was only the second victory of Fernández in his career, after having been victorious in the third stage of the Vuelta a Asturias.
Fernández declared after the stage: "The beginning of the stage was hard, until the breakaway group [of Jon Bru and Xabat Otxotorena] was gone, then it was more relaxed, until the last mountain where Relax attacked."
'"Matxin' told me to follow the breakaways so that we did not have to work in the peloton. Sevilla worked in the last kilometers of the ascent, and I was faster in the descent and went on with my rhythm."
Despite coming to the race to work for the team leader José Angel Gomez Marchante, he hopes not to lose too much time in the individual time trial tomorrow, which Fernández described as the decisive stage. "If you loose too much time in the time trial, you can not win the race," he said. Sunday's final stage will also prove to be decisive with seven mountain passes on the course.
How it unfolded
Sun and heat were the companions of the one hundred and twenty six riders on the first stage of the Euskal Bizikleta from Eibar to Tolosa, along the Atlantic coast, the Gulf of Bizkaia. Even though the race was shortened from five to three days, it is by no means easy, and the riders had to tackle four category three mountains during the stage, and one category one just eleven kilometers before the finish line.

At the start, the favourites were in great demand. When Samuel Sánchez (Euskaltel-Euskadi), José Ángel Gómez Marchante (Saunier Duval) and Ruben Plaza (Caisse d'Epargne) came to the presentation, the interest in interviews on the part of the journalists showed whom they evaluate as the ones who should be able to win the race.
From the start, the teams of the favourites did much of the attacking, with Euskaltel-Euskadi, Relax GAM, the combative team Fuerteventura Canarias and the young team of directeur sportif Álvaro González de Galdeano, Orbea-Oreka all having a go without success.

Jon Bru (Euskaltel-Euskadi) was the first on the summit of the Alto de Areitio (kilometer 5.3), followed by Roman Kreuziger (Liquigas) and David López (Caisse d'Epargne). About forty kilometers and several attacks later, Jon Bru went clear, and Xabat Otxotorena (Orbea Oreka) was the only one who was able to follow him. The two harmonized well and reached a maximum of 8'43 on the peloton.
At kilometer 50, Adrian Palomares (Fuerteventura Canarias) and Iñigo Lazkano (Orbea Oreka) escaped from the peloton and spent much of the race trying to reach the two Basques in front, but their attempt was doomed to failure after three mountains of the third category (Alto de Milloi, Alto de Itziar and Alto de Meaga), that were crossed first by Jon Bru, who that way is the first one to wear the jersey of the winner of the mountain classification.
Xabat Otxotorena, in contrast, transformed himself in the winner of the 'Metas Volantes' classification, as he won the two intermediate sprints in Berriatua (km 85.1) and Aizarnazabal (km 134.7).

But the two escaped riders were not able to resist the peloton, that kilometer by kilometer reduced the gap. In the climb to the Alto de Santa Ageda (1st category), the two were captured by the peloton, where Saunier Duval now began to work. Alberto Fernández de la Puebla was the first Saunier rider to escape, followed by his team – mate José Ángel Gómez Marchante and the Relax GAM rider Óscar Sevilla. The two Saunier riders made Sevilla work until the summit of the Alto de Santa Ageda, allowing Sevilla to take the points.
On the descent, Alberto Fernández was the fastest and so, with two kilometers to go, he was again the head of the race, and kept his advantage until the arrival in the picturesque little town Tolosa.
Tomorrow morning, a stage of 92.4 kilometers and two mountains of the second category wait for the peloton, as they will ride from Tolosa to Abadiño. In the evening, the mentioned time trial will be competed on a 20.5 kilometer long circuit with start and arrival in Abadiño.
