Pucinskaite in pink; Bubnenkova takes finale

Svetlana Bubnenkova (Fenixs-HPB-Evilsavino) had today's stage win programmed into her mind when she relentlessly attacked her breakaway companions with in the last five kilometres - a cherished tribute to her teammate Liane Bahler who passed away in a car accident on her travels to compete in this year's event. The Russian queen of the mountain leader made her final and winning attack in the streets of Seregno with 350 metres to go and held off second placed Grete Treier (Michela Fanini) and third placed Marta Bastianelli (Safi-Pasta).
Edita Pucinskaite (Equipe Nurnberger) won the prized maglia rosa for the second consecutive Giro Donne. The Lithuanian proved the strength of her time trial when she took the lead in Stage 1's prologue. While Pucinskaite lost the jersey after Stage 2's field sprint, she took it back after Stage 3's time trial and was never headed from then on. The leading lady proved her climbing prowess and tactical ability when she held off former race winner Nicole Brandli (Bigla) and Spaniard Maribel Moreno Allue (Spanish National Team) through the mountainous regions of Northern Italy.

"I am happy to win this Giro because it was a victory full of suffering," Pucinskaite said after she put on her pink jersey for the final podium. "I have to say thank you to my team because we had only five riders and they always stayed close to me."
Swiss rider Brandli moved into second place ahead of the consistent Spaniard Allue after Stage 5's climb over Arcumeggia's steep switchbacks, but the former winner didn't find the opportunity to reduce the 18 seconds needed to over take Pucinskaite. "Nicole Brandli was a great adversary this year and I have a lot of esteem for her," Pucinskaite said. "It was a very hard Giro with a lot of strong adversaries - more than last year. But, my gratitude also goes to Guiseppi Riviolti for saving this race because it was still in doubt up until the last moment."
The 18th annual Giro Donne tapped into some of the most supportive cycling regions in Italy, where scenic landscape and rich cycling heritage prompt many of the world's top professional riders to call it home. But the top ranked women's event start had been uncertain after it fell under financial pressures. Race promoter, Giuseppe Rivolta, took the event under his wings five years ago and helped it to reach its eighteenth year, the age of official maturity in Italy. "After my fifth experience directing the Giro Donne, I am particularity happy for two reasons," explained Rivolta. "The first is because of the participations of the best teams in the world. The second reason is because this race has reached an age of maturity and with maturity it can continue to live and can now decide the best direction for itself."
How it unfolded

The eighth and final stage of the Giro Donne took the riders on two 23 kilometre laps from Seregno and back before setting out on one 60 kilometre circuit that contained two significant climbs and once again to greet the thousands of fans that awaited in the streets of Seregno.
The field showed no signs of fatigue when the flurry of the attacks started just one kilometre into the 106 kilometre stage. Some 20 kilometres later a group of nine riders split from the field that included Singrid Corneo (Menikini-Selle Italia), Adrie Visser (DSB Bank), Noemi Cantele (Bigla), Luisa Tamanini (Safi-Pasta), Chantel Beltman (T-Mobile) and Niki Egyed (Raleigh Life Force).
Once the break was clear from the field a second group of five riders attempted to bridge across and became caught in no man's land for 30 kilometres before the peloton reabsorbed them at the end of the second short circuit.
The original break of nine stayed intact over Brianzia, the first climb on the large circuit where Tamanini (Safi-Pasta) won the Queen of the Mountains ahead of Cantele (Bigla) and Corneo (Menikini-Selle Italia). The break reunited after the QOM but 10 kilometres later it was forced to continue up Lissolo, a steeper climb that ended with Cantele winning the QOM over Corneo and Tamanini. Though Tamanini accumulated enough points to equal Bubnenkova for the lead in the climbing classification, the tie was broken when Bubnenkova won the stage.
The break dwindled from nine to four over the last climb, with only Corneo, Tamanini, Cantele and Beltman remaining. But the strength of four was not enough to hold off a chase group that contained all of the general classification riders, with the exception of world champion and the Giro points winner Marianne Vos (DSB Bank), and they were reabsorbed.
With five kilometres to go Svetlana Bubnenkova (Fenixs-HPB-Evilsavino) initiated an attacked and took with her Grete Treier (Michela Fanini), Marta Bastanielli (Safi-Pasta), Chantel Beltman (T-Mobile) and Tatiana Guderzo (AA-Drink Cycling Team). Neither of the new breakaway riders posed a threat to the GC and worked well together until they had a sizeable gap on the remaining 10 riders.
Winner of the best young rider competition, Tatiana Guderzo, made the first attack on the small break but was immediately countered by Bubnenkova. When they all came back together Bubnenkova attacked a third time and was countered by Beltman in hopes of taking a fourth stage win for T-Mobile. Bubnenkova, unwilling to give up, pulled Beltman back and then jumped with 350 metres to go to take the win.
