Escuela surprises everyone at Cascade

Many of the usual suspects were on the front as the first stage of the Cascade Classic arrived at the final mile-long climb - Chris Baldwin (Toyota-United), Phil Zajicek (Navigators Insurance) and Ben Jacques-Maynes (Priority Health). But someone forgot to tell Argentinian Ricardo Escuela (Successful Living-ParkPre) who rode away from the top names in the final kilometre to put 21 seconds on the rest of the field.

"I didn't get much of a look at him when he came by me," said second place Chris Baldwin. "The finish is this pyramid hill that comes out of nowhere in the middle of Bend - a one mile road that winds around in M.C. Escher style. Everyone was together going into it, and Ricardo Escuela, Phil Zajicek and Ben Jacques-Maynes got a gap. I was way behind but eventually got up there and attacked them. I tried to ride them off my wheel but [Escuela] stuck tough and jumped me at 100 metres."

"I had a couple of guys looking after me today," said Zajicek. "I thought Baldwin was really strong but Escuela made us look silly. It was the three of us in the final kilometre but he just gassed us. I was a little bummed to lose so much time in just a few hundred metres."

The Successful Living team, directed by former top American racer Steve Hegg, is quickly making a name for itself in the month of July, having scored two big wins last weekend at the Cougar Mountain Classic. However, having a leader's jersey to defend in a tough stage race will be a much bigger step to take.

Both Zajicek and Baldwin both had strong races in Oregon last month in the Mt. Hood Classic and, despite the first stage, are in good position for the overall. "I think tomorrow is going to be good and aggressive, with a lot of opportunities for me and a tough mountain top finish," said Zajicek. "I feel real good," Baldwin added. "I felt on top of my game here last year and again this year. We are chasing NRC points and the guys had some good placings today."
