Tour of Siam - 2.2Thailand, January 20-25, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - January 22: Sri Nakharindra Dam – Wachiralongkorn Dam, 133.3 kmMalaysian wins bunch sprint as Fukushima secures yellowBy Laszlo Szilasi in Wachiralongkorn Dam Malaysian rider Ahmad Haidar (Le Tua Malaysia) won the Tour of Siam's third stage in a close bunch sprint ahead of Japanese Miyazawa Takashi (Team Nippo Haiden) and former yellow jersey wearer Ger Soepenberg (Altipower). The stage was marked by a breakaway of seven riders, caught by the peloton three kilometres from the finish line. On the GC, Fukushima defended his jersey comfortably after his Nippo team controlled today's 133 km stage perfectly. How it unfoldedFrom one dam to the other... Maybe this could be the motto of the organisers, because today's stage also ended near a dam. Wachiralongkorn Dam is the nearest dam to the city of Kanchanaburi and its landscape is one of the most beautiful places in Thailand. Cloudy weather greeted the 100 riders this morning, with much lower temperatures then in the previous days. Early actions started again straight from the start line and a three-men group got clear shortly. The break included Hirose Yoshimasa (Skil Shimano), Danish Rune Udby (Glud&Marstand Horsens) and Australian Peter Dawson (Australian Track Team) and because all three were far behind in the GC, the leaders' teams let them go. The first intermediate sprint at km 46,7 was reached in the same order. After this point the route reached a moderately hilly region, including a series of short climbs. Around km 50, four riders - Dong Xing Yan (Discovery Channel - Marco Polo), Shinagawa Masahiro (Skil Shimano), Yakovlev Yevgeniy (Poligon Sweet Nice) and Sirous Hashemzadeh (Azad University- Iran) - decided to jump away from the main bunch and after some 20 km hard chasing work they reached the front trio, so we had a seven men strong front group. Back in the peloton, Team Nippo controlled the race in a moderate pace, which was well appreciated. Fukushima teammates did their job on the front for their captain, while the yellow jersey was going back to the team cars to get bidons for everybody. When the race hit the 90 km mark, the advantage of the lead group was four minutes. At this point the peloton decided to chase hard, so the Nippo boys could have a bit of rest, while team Giant Asia and Hong Kong Pro Cycling teams moved to the front. The seven in the lead group started to attack each other 20 km from the finish, but it seemed to be too early so the gap started to came down quickly. 15 km from the finish, they had 1'45", but 5 km later only one minute left for them. Eight km from the finish the Danish rider attacked with Hashemzadeh on his wheel, managing to get a 15" gap. The peloton was in full fly mode at this time, so three km from the line they caught everybody and the teams started to gear up for a mass sprint. In the end it seemed that the winner of the first stage was going to get another victory, but in the last meters the Malaysian rider hit the front and snatched it away from him. The leader of the GC, the KOM and the Sprint jersey remained unchanged. Tomorrow, riders will head to the Queens stage of this years Siam Tour with the finish at the same place as today after 183 km. GC contenders took today's stage to regenerate, because tomorrow will be a hard day in the saddle. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Laszlo Szilasi/www.velo.hu
