6th Tour of Qatar - 2.1Qatar, January 28-February 2, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - February 1: Al Zubarah - Mesaieed, 160.5 kmBreakaway alters overallThe longest stage of the Tour of Qatar came down to a sprint from a breakaway group of ten, with Greg Van Avermaet of the Predictor-Lotto team nabbing his first professional win. Wilfried Cretskens (Quick-Step) takes over the general classification from his teammate Boonen, which is a small consolation after his last kilometre solo move was caught just before the line. Cretskens described the team's strategy going into the stage, "After what we had managed yesterday with Tom Boonen, the goal this morning before the start of the stage was to have a Quick-Step rider in all breakaway attempts. So I was the one to be in the good group. I then really wanted to win the stage but I unfortunately missed out on victory for 20 metres." The team set out to win every stage of the Tour, but has fallen one short, however Cretskens dons the leader's jersey which was a bit unexpected for the Belgian. "It's a bit of a surprise to find myself with the golden jersey on my shoulders today. I certainly wasn't expecting that... my job is normally working for the team - for Tom Boonen - my job is to launch him for his sprints. It's a fantastic reward, a great gift." Van Avermaet salvaged the race for Predictor-Lotto, who lost their sprinter Tom Steels in a horrible crash on stage two, with his win today. Van Avermaet launched his sprint less than 100 metres before the line, just barely getting ahead Milram's Marcel Sieberg. Sieberg was disappointed with the loss, "I started from far back to attempt to take over the Quick-Step men," said Sieberg, "There was a tail wind and I thought that I would have been successful in bring them back. Unfortunately Van Avermaet jumped in the last metres. A true shame." How it unfolded129 riders started the fifth stage of Tour of Qatar from the top northern tip of the country in All Zubarah with Nico Eeckhout (Chocolade Jacques) being the only non-starter. The Chocolade Jacques team started the attacks with Coenen and Vanheule launching moves, but the first successful breakaway was 30 kilometres into the stage, when Kevin Van Impe (Quick-Step), Marcel Sieberg (Milram), Baumann (T-Mobile), Belohvosciks (Saunier Duval) and Mikhailov (Astana) slipped away to a maximum 25" lead. The five were caught in less than 10 kilometres, and quickly countered by a group of riders who would form the winning break. Marcel Sieberg (Milram), Aleksandr Kuschynski (Liquigas), Wilfried Cretskens (Quick-Step), Kim Kirchen (T-Mobile), Stéphane Poulhiès (Ag2R Prévoyance), Greg Van Avermaet (Predictor-Lotto), Sven Krauss (Gerolsteiner), Mauro Da Dalto (Liquigas), Erki Pütsep (Bouygues Telecom) and Maarten Tjallingii (Skil-Shimano) quickly built up a lead of more than two minutes. By end of the first hour, the race had covered over 48 kilometres, and by the first intermediate sprint, the break had nearly four minutes on the field. Van Avermaet took the maximum points ahead of DA Dalto and Tjallingii. In the bunch, golden jersey Tom Boonen suffered a puncture, and spent about 20 kms in the second chase group before making it up to the main peloton. His chase was made more difficult by the high speeds of the main bunch, who had closed the gap to the leaders down to 45 seconds. Once Boonen regained the bunch, the gaps went back out, and was back up to more than five minutes by the second bonus sprint, which was claimed by Tjallingii ahead of Kuschynski and Krauss. As the leaders approached the finish in Mesaieed, the Saunier Duval-led pack held the gap to a steady five minutes while the lead group continued to work smoothly together until the final three kilometres. A light rain started to fall, making the many round-abouts and sharp turns on the run-in a bit dangerous, and the leading bunch worked their way through the traffic obstacles carefully. When the road straightened out, Cretskens made his move, and opened up a gap of several seconds on the bunch, but his legs gave out just metres before the line, and Van Avermaet sped past to take the stage. The chasing peloton shattered in the closing kilometres, and the bunch kick was taken by Quick-Step's Steven De Jongh ahead of Benny De Schrooder (Chocolade Jacques) and Marcus Burghardt (T-Mobile). Boonen rolled in safely in 20th place, losing his leader's jersey to his teammate Cretskens, but maintaining his hold on the points competition.
