6th Tour of Qatar - 2.1Qatar, January 28-February 2, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - January 31: Camel Race Track - Doha Golf Club, 139.5 kmBoonen triples in QatarTom Boonen (Quick-Step) roared to his third win in Doha, giving the Quick Step team their fourth win and getting one step closer to fulfilling the team's pre-race promise to win every stage of the Tour of Qatar. After coming out on top of the Petacchi vs. Boonen duel on stages two and three, Boonen took a different tactic on the fourth stage, making a 21-man breakaway and leaving Petacchi behind. Boonen showed his Belgian hard-man characteristics answering multiple attacks in the final kilometres, and then easily winning the sprint over Aussie Graeme Brown (Rabobank). With the win, Boonen keeps his lock on the leader's golden jersey. "I was with Tosatto, De Jongh and Cretskens in the leaders' group," explained Boonen after the win. "They all did a fantastic job. I'd have been very happy if one of them had won but during the final everyone was attacking." Boonen's team worked hard to keep the attacks under control. "At this point we decided that we would work together for another sprint," Boonen said. "Cretskens managed to fight off an incredible amount of attacks. Tosatto launched me from the 1,500 metre mark up to 400 metres from the finish line, and then De Jongh took over. All I had to do was to finalise their work!" Alessandro Petacchi was philosophical about the outcome today. "I lost at the moment the group broke apart due to the high side winds," said Petacchi after the stage. "Some of my teammates remained ahead, they had some technical problems [ear pieces - ed.] and were not able to assist in my re-entry. In any case, I will continue with my work here that I think will bear its fruits." "It is unfortunate that Alessandro lost contact at the last minute; in the nervous section and at a fast pace," said Milram director sportif Antonio Bevilacqua. "Amongst the guys up front, there were five of our team members; Sieberg, Cortinovis, Velo, Ongarato and Sacchi. ... But nothing too bad. Tomorrow we will see if there the possibility of another good test." How it unfoldedStrong desert winds were blowing at the Camel Race Track before the start of stage four, and reminiscent of a Vuelta Espana stage, the team directors mapped out the decisive point where the wind could be used to their advantage. Heading out into a strong tailwind, the high speed of the pack was too much for some tired early season legs, and several groups of riders were dropped. Just five kilometers into the stage, the Quick Step team put the screws to the peloton, and pulled away a group of about 20 riders including leader Tom Boonen, catching Alessandro Petacchi and his Milram team off guard. With the help of T-mobile (riding for Bernard Eisel), Rabobank (for Brown), and AG2R riding in support of the young rider competition leader Loyd Mondory, the lead group worked smoothly together to slowly open up the gap on Petacchi's chasing group of 24 riders. Kilometre after kilometre, the gap between the two lead groups eased out while the remainder of the peloton settled for an easier pace. In the first intermediate sprint, Bernard Eisel (T-mobile) took the maximum points ahead of Loyd Mondory (AG2R) and Stephen De Jongh (Quick Step). After a quick first hour, covering 58.5 km, the course turned into a cross-headwind, and the gap to Petacchi's chase group opened up to 1'15 by the feeding zone (km 80). The second intermediate sprint was won by Mondory ahead of Eisel and Boonen, but the lead group quickly went back to a tight paceline to keep the chasers at bay. All the way to the finish line, the Petacchi group never managed to ger closer than 44” to the leaders, and sensing the futility of their chase when the gap was still more than two minutes with 10 kilometres to go, the chasers allowed the gap to balloon to more than five minutes at the finish. Once the chasers gave up the ghost, it was time for the other teams in the lead group to try and drop Boonen, a task that would prove quite difficult. The first attempt was made by the T-mobile riders, who went to the front to try to put Quick Step in the gutter. When that failed to detach the golden jersey, Boonen's former teammate Servais Knaven put in a few digs, but well familiar with Knaven's strength, the Quick Step team kept him on a short leash. Then it was time for another Belgian, Leif Hoste, to make a move, and Hoste immediately opened up a gap of several seconds - a gap that Tom Boonen himself decided to close down. Heading into the final kilometres, Tom Stubbe (Chocolade Jacques) put in a bold attack as the sprinters were formulating their plans, and held onto a two second lead until Boonen sent his lead-out train to the front. With De Jongh dropping Boonen off with 200 metres to go, there would be no one who could contend for the win, and Boonen won comfortably ahead of Graeme Brown (Rabobank) and Murilo Fischer (Liquigas). Tomorrow's penultimate stage from Al Zubarah to Mesaieed will be the longest stage of the tour at 160.5 km. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by AFP Photo
