6th Tour of Qatar - 2.1Qatar, January 28-February 2, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - January 29: Al Wakra - Qatar Olympic Committee, 135.5 kmBoonen wins first direct matchAs expected, the first stage of the Tour of Qatar after yesterday’s team time trial ended up in a bunch sprint, and as expected, it was a tight battle between two of the world's greatest sprinters: Tom Boonen and Alessandro Petacchi. This time, the Belgian was the one who had his tyre ahead of the Italian on the finish line. After 135.5km of riding, the title holder once again proved that Qatar was his winning territory as he claimed his first success of 2007, and took over the overall leader’s yellow jersey from his teammate Steven De Jongh. "I didn’t want my teammates to start their effort too early," said Boonen after the stage. "I asked Tosatto and De Jongh to wait until the last moment to start their effort and lead me out. I then did the necessary to capture the win." Italian supersprinter Petacchi was still satisfied with his performance, although he had to give in to his greatest rival. "My teammates took over the lead with two kilometres to go," he commented. "In the final meters, I was behind Boonen who was led out by one of his guys. Tom surprised me; I took his wheel but I couldn't come round him. I'm still happy because it was my first real sprint since eight months and it wasn't easy mentally. I feel good and that what's important to me." In the middle of the sprint, a crash occurred as Graeme Brown (Rabobank) collided with Tom Steels (Predictor-Lotto), who hit the ground. The Australian was found responsible of this dangerous move and later lost his initial third spot, as he was relegated by the race commissaires. Throughout the stage, the riders had to fight against the wind, in otherwise perfect conditions. "It was a very strange day," added Boonen. "I don’t recall witnessing such a bizarre wind here in Qatar. It made the stage very tricky and tense." Asked if he was aiming at taking the overall win again this year, the former World Champion replied, "There really is a fierce competition on this Tour of Qatar. My goal isn’t to win all the stages. For the moment, I’m well satisfied with the race. I would be happy with my race if it had to stop today." How it unfoldedAll 136 riders of this sixth edition of the Tour of Qatar took off again this morning from Al Wakra by the sea, heading west before returning to the state’s capital Doha. The action started after 25 kilometres when two riders, Marcus Burghardt (T-Mobile) and Kenny De Haes (Chocolade Jacques) took advantage of a fall and a favourable wind to break away. Two other men chased them down after a few clicks: Murilo Fischer (Liquigas) and Jérôme Pineau (Bouygues). The Brazilian and the French enjoyed a long moment leading the race with the gap growing to a maximum of 2’35 at km 42. The pack led by the Quickstep and Milram teams then really started chasing and both men were caught at km 58. The peloton was all together at the first intermediate sprint of the day (km 73), won by yellow jersey De Jongh (QuickStep) ahead of his teammate Gert Steegmans and Aurélien Clerc (Bouygues). After the pace slowed down, five riders managed to take off at km 76: Bert Roesems (Predictor), Kenny De Haes (Chocolade Jacques) and Piet Rooijakkers (Skil) rapidly caught by Christophe Riblon (AG2R) and Dmitriy Muravyev (Astana). Their lead started gradually growing from 1’40 at km 82 to a maximum 4’15 at km 94. The sprinter's teams then started to reel them in with around forty kilometres to go. At the second intermediate sprint (km 135.5) won by De Haes ahead of Roesems and Muravyev, the front men’s advantage on the pack had dropped down to 2’05 and was then of only 35 seconds with 10 kilometres to go. All five were to be caught in the final part of the stage. With the Milram, Rabobank and Quickstep teams taking control of the pack, a bunch sprint finish was bound to happen. After winning four of the five stages last year, Tom Boonen again outsprinted all his main rivals with Petacchi clinching the second spot and Jean-Patrick Nazon (AG2R) finishing third - which should boost the confidence of the French rider, who already won two stages in the Tour de France in 2003 and 2004, but who has had trouble repeating his accomplishments these last couple of years.
