Jelajah Malaysia - 2.2Malaysia, January 6-12, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 6 - January 11: Ipoh - Kuala Kubu Bahru, 141.6 kmManan, what a man!By Jean-François Quénet in Kuala Kubu Baru Here's the sprinter that Malaysia was looking for since Le Tour de Langkawi was created in 1996, offering the participants a large proportion of bunch sprints to expose their cycling skills: Anuar Manan, only 20, has claimed his second stage win in the seven-day long Jelajah Malaysia after his first sensational sprint victory in Kota Bharu on Monday. He also proved himself to be the best sprinter of the race when he took a few hot spot sprints on the way, therefore he's now leading the points competition and he needs only one more point to make sure runner up Harrif Salleh cannot strap it from him. "I think the green jersey is already mine", he said prior to the final criterium to be held in Putrajaya, the home of Malaysian government, on Friday. "Today was another flat stage in which I had an advantage for trying to win again," Manan commented. "My team worked well to keep it together but the breakaway was hard to catch." In fact, five men stayed away for more than 50km; leader of the Malaysian rider classification Suhardi Hassan (Kuala Lumpur), Kazakh fighter Evgeni Yakovlev (Polygon Sweet Nice), stage 1 winner Makoto Iijima (Japan), Badr Bhanihammad (United Arab Emirates) and 42 year-old evergreen Nathan Dahlberg (Farso). Having won the bunch sprint the day before with Wang Kam Po, the Hong Kong Pro Team took their responsibilities for catching the leading group. Then, not only Manan showed his explosivity in the finale again but he made it due to the support of his LeTua team. The new Malaysian continental team backed by entrepreneurs who call themselves "cycling enthusiasts" gave another sign for their well deserved late entry at Le Tour de Langkawi next month (February 2-11). "We had studied the finish on a map," Manan explained. "I knew there were a few sharp turns before the line. I had to stay up front and avoid to be caught behind anybody." Wearing the green jersey, he was given a Crédit Agricole short by his staff for matching the colours on stage 6 while Suhardi is a regular in Française des Jeux outfits. Malaysian riders are big fans of French pro teams, so they'll have a lot to enjoy when Crédit Agricole, Française des Jeux, Ag2r and Bouygues Telecom will line up at Le Tour de Langkawi. It'll be an attraction to see what Manan can do against the top pro sprinters. "It'll be my first time in such a big race," he said. I'm proud to do it with my team but I don't know yet where I stand with the big sprinters. I'm looking forward to giving [Langkawi] a shot." Manan is built like a pure sprinter and he must be more than a decent rider for winning at the end of another fast stage that finished ahead of fastest schedule – 17 minutes this time – at a respectable average speed of 45.58 km/h. Asian cycling is no walk in the park these days. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Jean-François Quénet/Cyclingnews.com
