Jelajah Malaysia - 2.2Malaysia, January 6-12, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - January 8: Kula Terengganu - Kota Bahru, 161.4 kmAnuar Manan is Malaysia's sprinter in the makingBy Jean-François Quénet in Kota Bharu It will be interesting to see Anuar Manan competing in next month's Le Tour de Langkawi against some of the world's top sprinters like Danilo Hondo, Julian Dean and Ruben Bongiorno. It looks like Malaysia now has the man to improve the country's best stage result so far produced since Asia's premier cycling event was created in 1996. So far, Nor Effandy Rosli and Suhardi Hasan have only managed to come 5th in bunch sprints. Before moving on to the next task of his young career, former mountain biker Manan enjoyed his first pro victory in Kota Bharu where a few crashes occurred in the last six kilometres on a wet road. "I managed to avoid all that because I was always in the front with my team-mates", he said. But his designated lead out man Ahmad Haidar was himself victim of a heavy crash 500 metres before the finish line. It didn't prevent him from out-sprinting Saiful Anuar Aziz. Both riders are 20 years-old and hail from Terengganu, where stage 3 started. To see Malaysians beating Russian sprinter Sergeï Kudentsov from Discovery Channel-Marco Polo shows how much cycling is improving in this country, not only from race organizations point of view. "My team worked hard from the start, Manan explained. We shared the train with [race leader Makoto Iijima's] Japan to catch all the breakaways and we managed to keep the bunch together for the sprint. It's a great feeling to win. After three years of racing internationally, this is my first win." And probably not the last one. It's a great start for Malaysia's new continental team LeTua based in Subang Jaya. After only three days of racing, with Manan also leading the points classification, they showed they highly deserve their spot as the 22nd team to enter Le Tour de Langkawi (February 2-11).
