16th Challenge Volta a Mallorca - 1.1 (x5) - 1.1Spain, February 11-15, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 5 - February 15: Trofeo Calvia (1.1), Magalluf - Palmanova, 149.3 kmEtxebarria lands stage while Leon Sanchez nets overallBy Shane Stokes in Palmanova, Majorca Luis Leon Sanchez has delighted his team’s co-sponsors by taking the final overall victory in the Challenge Volta a Mallorca today. Following good team-work by his Caisse d’Epargne-Illes Balears [Baleric Islands] companions during the concluding 147.6 kilometre stage, the 23 year old Spaniard finished safely in the main bunch and thus ended the five-day race some eight seconds clear of Vladimir Gusev (Discovery Channel), Ezequiel Mosquera (Karpin Galicia) and Alberto Fernandez (Saunier Duval-Prodir). Stage two winner Vicente Reynes (Illes Balears – Caisse d’Epargne) and José Adrian Bonilla (Fuerteventura-Canarias) were a further ten seconds back in fifth and sixth, with Reynes taking the prize for best Mallorcan rider in the race. Apart from Sanchez, the day’s other big winner was Unai Extebarria of the Euskaltel-Euskadi team. The Venezuelan jumped away close to the line on Palmanova’s sunny seafront and held off the rest of the 36 man front group, with Francisco José Ventoso (Saunier Duval-Prodir), Murilo Fischer (Liquigas), David Kopp (Gerolsteiner) and Reynes filling the minor placings. Sanchez was delighted with the victory. "First of all I want to thank all my team-mates because they did an exceptional job, from the very first to the very last kilometre of the stage," he stated. "They really helped me to win the Challenge and I feel very motivated to go on training and preparing myself for my first main objective, which will be Paris-Nice. I will take part in the Vuelta a la Comunidad Valenciana, without any pressure, but if I can win something there too, why not!" Extebarria won the same stage three years ago, also with an attack close to the finish, and said that this knowledge helped once again. "I have been a long time in cycling and did this stage many times. It is tough, it has some medium-mountains and it meant that there was a reduced group at the finish "The stage was very fast, very hard and my team worked very well, as they did throughout this race. I was preparing the sprint for Koldo [Fernandez] but in the final kilometre things changed and I attacked, as I did when I won here before. I am very happy as it is my first victory [this season]." The tough, undulating stage was marked by a long-distance breakaway by Angel Vallejo (Relax Gam) and Beñat Albizuri (Euskaltel Euskadi) but diminutive mountains leader Jorge Ferrio (Andalucia – Cajasur) did a good job of mopping up the remaining KOM points, dominating that category. Tomas Vaitkus (Discovery Channel) finished on top in the meta volantes (hot spot sprints) classification and Saunier Duval came out on best in the teams’ competition. How it unfolded199 riders started the fifth and final stage in Magalluf, a popular holiday resort destination on the south west of Mallorca. They rolled out under cloudless blue skies and 18 degree temperatures for what would be a testing 147.6 loop finishing in nearby Palmanova, taking in two third cat climbs and three seconds category ascents along the way. Bernhard Eisel (T-Mobile Team), Angel Vallejo (Relax Gam) and Beñat Albizuri (Euskaltel Euskadi) attacked three kilometres after the drop of the flag and, one kilometre later, passed through the meta volantes sprint in Calvià in that order. Eisel lost contact nine kilometres into the stage and by the top of the second category climb of Sa Gramola (km 22), prime winner Albizuri and Vallejo were 2’32 ahead of the Austrian and a further 30 seconds up on the peloton. 36 kilometres were covered in the first hour and at this point, the two leaders had a gap of 4’03. Very soon afterwards Oscar García (Relax-Gam) and Alberto Contador (Discovery Channel) crashed. Albizuri and Vallejo were sharing out the primes between them, the former taking first at the top of the second category climbs Coll d’en Claret (km 52) and Coll de Soller (km 84) while Vallejo nabbed the points at the meta volantes sprint in between. Meanwhile the peloton was gaining after what had been a maximum deficit of 4’17 and at the top of the Soller, the splintering main bunch was just 30” back. Jorge Ferrio (Andalucia-Cajasur) had started the day leading the mountains classification and he was making a strong defence, taking third there and also on the first ascent of the d’en Claret. The two leaders were finally hauled back after 94 kilometres of racing. Soon afterwards Anton Luengo (Euskaltel Euskadi) attacked and stayed clear for seven kilometres; a subsequent move by Stijn Devolder (Discovery Channel) was negated after two. Thomas Ziegler (T-Mobile) was the next aggressor, taking the prime at the top of the Coll d’en Claret (km 111.1). Luis Perez (Andalucía Cajasur) jumped away nine kilometres later but a fast-moving peloton had him back by kilometre 127. Vicente Reynes and race leader Luis Leon Sánchez showed Caisse d’Epargne’s strength when they led the peloton across the third cat Coll des Tords (km 134.1), with yesterday’s stage winner Toni Colom (Astana) next in line. As the finish drew closer it looked more and more likely that Sánchez would hold on to his overall lead. And so it proved, the Spaniard heading into Palmanova as part of the peloton. Few would have bet against a bunch sprint but Unai Etxebarria thought otherwise, getting a small gap close to the line and soloing in to nail the win.
