31st Urkiola Igoera-Subida Urkiola - 1.1Spain, August 5, 20072006 Results Results Past winners Gómez takes great victorySaunier Duval's José Ángel Gómez Marchante topped off a successful day for his Spanish squad by adding Subida a Urkiola victory to the British National Champion title won by teammate David Millar. Saunier Duval formed a strong showing at the Basque Country event, placing David Cañada, Manuele Mori, and Iker Camaño in the original break of 26 riders. In the first climb to Urkiola, José Angel Gómez Marchante, Juan Jose Cobo (both Saunier-Duval), and David López (Caisse d'Épargne) came from behind and decimated the leading group, reducing the number of riders to 12, five of which were clad in Saunier-Duval yellow. The trio of Cañada, Camaño, and Mori gave it their all from there until they reached the final ascent. The trio's work was taken over by Cobo, who set a devilish pace and got everything ready for Gómez Marchante's decisive attack with four kilometres to go. The Spaniard pushed hard over the final kilometres, pulling out a massive 40 second buffer over López in second, with Cobo crossing the line a further three seconds back to take third place. "After all I've been through over the last few months, today I'm the happiest man on Earth," said Gómez Marchante, who was left off the team's Tour de France squad after suffering from intestinal problems. "I can't thank my team enough for their awesome work, there are no words that can accurately describe my admiration and gratitude to them. "Today our strategy worked a treat: three men in the early breakaway, Lobato's great job in the first ascent, and me and Cobo coming from behind and getting ahead," he added. "I'm extremely happy since, for some thing or other, victory was being elusive to me. I missed the Tour for health issues, so being in the lead in San Sebastián yesterday felt just like winning. It really boosted by morale. Now I've got my mind set on the Vuelta a España, where I hope I can snatch one of the big wins, if things turn out they way we want. I'd like to share my happiness with my family, my wife and daughter, who's due in October. This is why I made this gesture when I crossed the finish line."
