Tour du Limousin - 2.1France, August 21-24, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - August 23: Abjat S/Bandiat – Rochechouart , 186.8 kmA first for JégouFédrigo retains overall leadBy Jean-François Quénet in Rochechouart 31 year-old Lilian Jégou logged his first professional win at the Tour du Limousin Stage 3. He's not counting his success in Gabon at the Tropicale Amissa Bongo. His win in the Limousin came at the top of the hill of Rochechouart, where one of France's most demanding amateur races used to be held on a grueling circuit. Jégou was a member of a 13-man breakaway that took off from the gun. So was Patrice Halgand, a former winner of the Tour du Limousin (in 2000 and 2002). "As I had no more chances to win the overall, I lost ten minutes on purpose yesterday so I'd be able to go in the move today," said the cagey Crédit Agricole rider who won a stage in the Tour de l'Ain last week. The other 11 men were Maryan Hary and Geoffroy Lequatre (Cofidis), Jean-Luc Delpech and Sébastien Duret (Bretagne-Armor Lux), Christophe Moreau and Renaud Dion (Ag2r), Niels Brouzes (Auber 93), Nicolas Jalabert and Samuel Plouhinec (Agritubel), Mathieu Perget and Sébastien Portal (Caisse d'Epargne). The highest ranked on GC was Hary, in 21st position, 9'21" behind Pierrick Fedrigo. There was never any real danger for Bouygues Telecom who could afford to let the breakaway take four minutes. "Nobody attacked us today because everyone had sore legs because of the rain," said Bouygues Telecom's directeur sportif Christian Guiberteau. Fedrigo lost one of his main rivals for the overall win, as Philippe Gilbert, the winner of stage 1, was forced to pull out at the feed zone." Because of the virus he still carries in his stomach, he had no more strength, and his participation to the Vuelta a Espana next week is now in question. Française des Jeux's DS Marc Madiot had no more riders left in the main pack at the end of the stage after he lost a few more in a crash with 20km to go. It involved Mickaël Delage who was sixth on the GC, less than one minute down on Fedrigo. But Madiot forgot all of his worries when Jégou was part of the right move at the front. With 25km to go, Halgand countered an acceleration by Brouzes on a hill. Four riders followed him: Jégou, Jalabert, Delpech and Lequatre. The latter got dropped with 5km to go. "My return to competition isn't easy after my crash in stage 5 in the Tour de France," Lequatre said. "But I'm happy to have taken the initiative and spent the whole day in the front." Another admirable French rider was Duret. He was away the entire way the day before, and he did it again! "Clément L'Hotellerie couldn't do everything: defend his lead at the KOM and keep his spot high on GC, so I went for the climbers classification," Duret explained. "At the end, we played the card of Delpech who is quite fast. It's not a bad for us." The crucial part of the stage happened one kilometer before the end when Halgand crashed. "I didn't know the curve, and my front wheel turned badly," the Crédit Agricole rider said. "More than the crash, I lost a lot of time because my chain was off the front ring, and I had to put it back on with my fingers. That's how I lost the stage. It's a pity. I was one leg above anybody else. I was sure to win." Halgand was the strongest of us," Jégou confirmed. Jégou's win shows the the wheels of fortune have turned. Since Jégou became a pro with Crédit Agricole in 2002, he was famous for his crashes, but this time he won because somebody else crashed. "My crash in Malaysia at Le Tour de Langkawi in February was a turning point in my career," he laughed. For once, it wasn't his fault when he fell in Khota Bahru. Since then, he has gone down only once, and that was in Pinerolo at the Tour of Italy when 60 riders fell together. Jégou rode the Tour de France last month and was still benefitting from his form. "Just like Benoît Vaugrenard at the Polynormande, I wanted to win badly with my Tour form," he said. "It's done now. It's a relief. I've waited for this for so long. Now I hope it'll mean more are coming. But honestly, I didn't think I'd win today when I passed the final climb once with 55km to go. It didn't suit me at all. I've had to hold on hard. My muscles were full of toxins for the final sprint. Delpech almost overtook me. Jalabert was also fast. It's been extremely difficult to win. That's probably what made it so enjoyable." As his team-mate Gilbert is out of the race, the final is now more of a duel between Fedrigo and Oscar Pereiro, who are separated by only six seconds. "Initially, I came here for training for the Tour of Spain, because the terrain is up and down all the time, but I wouldn't mind grabbing a win," said the man who will either be the winner or the runner-up of the 2006 Tour de France depending on the outcome of the Floyd Landis case. "I know by experience that this race is a question of bonuses on the final stage because I was exactly in the same situation last year, and I lost by one second to Leonardo Duque," Fedrigo said. "For the last day, I'd like to have drier conditions. With the rain, I won't feel as good." After three days of rain and cold, better weather is expected in Limoges on Friday, but it will be a hard battle for Fedrigo anyway. The staff of Bouygues Telecom crossed its fingers. "We're specialists in losing this race," Guiberteau said with a smile. It happened to Jean-Cyril Robin in 2000, the first year of the Bonjour team. But the team is hoping for better fortunes in Limoges. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Régis Garnier/www.velofotopro.com
