GP Tell - 2.2NcupSwitzerland, August 22-26, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - August 25: Zell - Zell, 148.2kmFankhauser follows Eibegger to victoryBy Andreas Oppliger Tyrolian rider Clemens Fankhauser, normally of Team Elk, but riding for the Austrian National squad, won stage three of the Swiss Nations Cup event. With this win he followed in the steps of his compatriot, last year's overall winner Markus Eibegger. Saturday was another brilliant day as far as weather conditions were concerned. The Swiss riders, who came from the only nation to field two squads, suffered defeat on yesterday's stage. With Matthias Frank launching an attack on the first climb, he showed that the "locals" were ready to take revenge for their performance of the day before. Gathering two additional Swiss riders and 10 riders from abroad, Frank served as the main force behind the group. However, his presence wasn't enough to keep the break away; they were caught by the main bunch, led by the Russian team of leader Anton Reshetnikov, 40 kms later. Immediately after the break was caught, Martin Kohler, another local and the future AG2R-pro Alexandr Pliuschin got away. For awhile, everything looked like the Moldavian had a shot to repeat his previous day's stage win. Kohler and Pliuschin worked in harmoniously and increased their advantage to more than two minutes. The heat near the end and the difficult laps around Zell became too difficult for the duo, and with 10km to go, Kohler lost contact to his Eastern European companion. On the final descent, Pliuschin was caught by a group of four athletes and later dropped back to the first bunch. After 147km, Fankhauser won the sprint among the four new leaders. He attacked with 300m to go. Only the super strong Reshetnikov was able to respond to his attack, but he lost the sprint by only a few centimetres. Danish mountain bike ace Jakob Fuglang and Chris Froome, riding with a Kenyan licence, were at the end of their forces and took third and fourth place for the stage. Fankhauser was very very happy about this win, "It's my third win of this season, but by far my most important victory on the interantional level." Russian leader Reshetniko was again forced to be satisfied with a place of honour, but he found consolation in keeping the overall lead and winning some seconds on Latvian rider Gatis Smukulis (riding for Velo-Club La Pomme Marseille outside Nation's Cup) PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Daniel Erismann
