Karpets descends to victory, Plaza takes over GC
Caisse d'Epargne scored a hat-trick in Stage 2 of the Vuelta Ciclista a la Rioja with Vladimir Karpets taking the stage, Ruben Plaza and David Arroyo in second and third, with Plaza taking control over the overall classification from Alberto Loddo (Selle-Italia). The 168-km stage began just past noon under a light rain and featured three punishing climbs that let out into a dangerous descent leading into the final 20km. Caisse d'Epargne was quickest to get organized and move its riders into the lead position on the downside of Rivas de Terso (143.2km). Flanked by team-mates, Ruben Plaza and David Arroyo, Karpets led the descent, pulling his team into a stage win as well as the overall and team classification lead.
"This victory shows that my condition is very good," said Karpets. "I took confidence with my victory in the time trial of the Vuelta a Castilla y León before confirming in Portugal, in Alentejo. Today's victory delights me more especially because it is a triumph for all our team."
The three climbs: category 2, 1, and 2 respectively, saw riders Pablo Urtasun (Liberty Seguros) Juan Jose Oroz (Orbea-Oreka SDA) and Igor Anton (Euskaltel-Euskadi) jockeying for mountain points during the first two climbs until the trio of Caisse d'Epargne riders began ascending during the second climb. Anton managed to clinch first place on the second and third climbs before a crash in the final descent vanquished him from the lead. Plaza's second place finish sends him to the top of the GC and into the leader's jersey heading into Stage 3.
"This morning I felt rather well, but I did not imagine that the things would finish as well", said Plaza , the new race leader. "The team worked a lot during the stage, initially to chase behind a breakaway and then to go for the stage victory. Together with Antón of Euskaltel, we came over the top of the Puerto de las Rivas with a good advantage.
"Unfortunately, on the descent, which was difficult and rather dangerous, Arroyo crashed twice. Antón crashed too, so at 15 km from the line, I found myself with Karpets at the head of the race. We continued until the end to win the stage and the first place of the general classification. We have a comfortable advance, with more than 50 seconds, and it should not be too difficult, but it will be necessary to remain attentive until the end, because a stage can always appear more complicated than it seems at first sight."
