Winter dominates ECCC weekend #6

It didn't feel like spring in Burington, Vermont, this weekend, as the New England winter refused to vacate northern Vermont. Frozen bottles greeted Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference (ECCC) racers Saturday morning as they competed in an 8.5 mile team time trial which was won by University of New Hampshire (UNH) and Dartmouth in the women's and men's A category.

The cold temperatures continued later in the day at the 0.8 mile, six-corner criterium around the athletic buildings and dormitories of the University of Vermont (UVM) campus.

Darmouth brings home Men's A crit win

In the Men's A race, the pace immediately ratcheted up off the start line, and the field quickly strung out. An early crash on the first corner took out a handful of riders, most of whom later re-entered the race with no serious injuries. UVM was aggressive before their home crowd, but the rest of the field constantly shut down their attempts at breaking away.

Vermont wasn't the only marked team - any rider that was lucky enough to get away from the group was only able to escape for a few laps, at most, before being caught by the field. The race stayed together, and a field sprint appeared to be the likely conclusion. Coming into the finish, the field fanned out and Eric Schildge (Dartmouth) sprinted to victory, with Will Dugan (UVM) coming in second and Craig Luekens (Yale) in third.

Pratt continues dominance in Women's A crit

Susannah Pratt continued to dominant in the Women's Crit. The ECCC women's overall leader from University of New Hampshire (UNH) won Saturday's crit with a solo breakaway. Pratt pulled away from the field with between 30 and 25 laps to go, and a chase group of six remained unable to catch her. Their efforts were made all the more difficult by the blocking work of Pratt's UNH teammate Julianne Stemp. At five laps to go, the chase group finally saw Pratt again - but this time she was lapping the field. Pratt sat in the bunch for the remainder of the race, as Dartmouth rider Jennifer Stebbins won the field sprint for second place overall.

Late winter storm cancels road race

Sunday's Mt. Philo road race, which was to finish up the 20% grade of the most feared course finale in the Eastern Conference, was cancelled due to snow. The storms of Thursday that hit New England left the finish covered in snow, and an early morning blast made the rest of the course unsafe to race on.

The officials made their call, and the event was cancelled.
