USA Crits Southeast Series - NEUSA, April 28-May 6, 2007Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Race Next Race Race 4 - May 2: Walterboro Cycling ClassicRollin home firstWalterboro hosted the fourth event of the South East Crit Series in another nighttime event. Canadian national champion Dominique Rollin (Kodak-Sierra Nevada) surprised the crowds again with his second win. Hot on Rollin's heals at the finish line was Rahsaan Bahati (Rock Racing) and Josh Thornton (Kodak-Sierra Nevada). It was arguably the darkest event in the series with little lights on the backside of the circuit but it did not stop the field from barreling around it at full speed. There was a prime on every lap that kept the field in single-file, but no matter how fast the peleton pushed the pace riders were still able to make their break away attempts until four laps to go. "I was nervous for the riders and safety is an issue here," Kodak-Sierra Nevada director Robins Zelner said. "There were no crashes though. I think it is because the race was so fast and single file that it didn't end up being dangerous for them." Kodak-Sierra Nevada and Rock Racing battled at the front of the field with their lead out trains intact for a field sprint. Zelner commented that the final laps were a perfectly executed plan. "We had the lead out for about five laps to go and went back and forth with Rock Racing," he explained. "It was a drag race on the backside of the course and we tried to protect Dominique as best we could because he is so strong right now." Coming around the final corner Bahati was able to squeeze in between Rollin and his teammate Thornton to take second place. It's Thornton's third time on the podium in the South East Series and is now the new leader. Rollin's second win has moved him into a close second place. Quick Pic nicks victoryIn the women's race Tina Pic (Colavita Sutter Home) over took the Cheerwine train in the final corner to take the win ahead of Laura VanGilder (Cheerwine) and Chantel Gauthier (Team Ultalink). Primes on every lap kept the speeds fast enough to hold the field together for another field sprint to the finish. Attacks went on the backsides of the circuit but were brought back before the two quick corners before the finishing straight. On the final lap Cheerwine lined up its cavalry to bring its sprinters Laura VanGilder and Kelly Benjamin home, but it lost several riders before the last corner and VanGilder found herself out front with Pic on her wheel. Third placed Gauthier is a former BMX national champion and came through the last corner on Pic's wheel to watch as she over took VanGilder at the line. Team UltraLink developed this winter out of Toronto, Canada and has had a strong presence in the field and during the breaks. Gauthier commented on the team's improvements on each day of the series and the learning curve of their new team. "Today we tried to be more present in the breaks and go for primes," said Gauthier. "We have a small team here and the team is new and young. The last two laps were pretty fast and Cheerwine lead it out for the entire last lap. There were some TargetTraining girls in the middle. I just tried to stay on Tina's wheel on the long straight away on the backside." The South East Crit Series will continue with the fifth event in Greenwood, South Carolina tomorrow afternoon.
