Tri-Peaks Challenge - NERussellville, Arkansas, May 19-21, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 3 - May 21: Road race, 135km/84milesBajadali and Heal finish on top at Tri-Peaksby Mark Zalewski, North American editor with additional reporting from Kirsten Robbins Stevic wins stage but Bajadali takes overallThe gamble that Toyota-United took yesterday in letting a large breakaway gain more than two minutes on then race leader Ivan Stevic backfired today as Andy Bajadali(Jelly Belly) hung with Stevic to the line in the final stage of the Tri-Peaks Challence. "The guy did a phenomenal job," Toyota-United's team director Harm Jansen said of Bajadali's performance. "Both of the guys performed way beyond expectations." Bajadali was one of the twenty-two riders in yesterday's breakaway which also contained three Toyota-United riders. "Yesterday in the break we had Baldwin, Blackgrove and the leader on the road Dominguez," said Jansen. "It was a tough decision whether to let them go or bring it back. But we didn't expect Bajadali to climb as well as he did. But it was good to see those two guys out climb the Scott Moningers and Nathan O'Neills of the race." Bajadali needed only to stay within two minutes of Stevic to take the overall victory. This is the first win for the Jelly Belly team during the two weekend Arkansas swing of races which comes close to their sponsor Orbea USA. Breon solos to stage victoryCheerwine rider Charm Breon made a solo break for it just seventeen miles into the final stage over Mt. Petite Jean. "Basically I was sitting on the front up Mt. Petite Jean and my legs felt good," said Breon. "I didn't have a break away in mind at all. I just road and realized I had a gap and just took advantage of it because I was so far back [thirteen minutes] on the general classification -- I never thought in a million years that I would have stayed away." Breon progressively made time on the field through out the remaining sixty-seven miles of the race. Teams behind made many attempts to bridge to Breon but none were successful. Team Victory Brewing sent a team of seven riders to the front to make sure that the gap did not grow to the point of losing their leaders jersey. The gap between Breon and the field grew to a maximum of eight minutes before reaching the left hand turn to Mt. Nebo. A chase group of three riders: Cheerwine's Holli Steelman, Colavita-Cooking Light's Audrey Lemieux, and Victory Brewing's Katharine Carroll made their way off of the front remaining in limbo at three and a half minutes in front of the peloton and four minutes behind Breon before being caught up the finishing climb. In the peloton Webcor rider Alisha Lions made her attack at the base of the climb bringing with her the race leader Rachel Heal. Lions crossed the line in second place for the stage and the general classification, thirty seconds ahead of Heal. Breon commented on her solo win as being unbelievable. "When I finally made the left turn to Mt. Nebo. I thought: is there a possibility I could win? I knew that I had gained four minutes on the group behind me but I thought that was the whole field because no one told me it was a small group of three chasing me. I didn't know I had eight minutes on the rest of the peloton. Once I saw one kilometer to go I thought: great I am going to win. You just never know you are going to win until you have actually won." "In a nutshell it was pure hell -- what more can you say when you are by yourself for sixty miles."
