Tour of Japan - 2.2Japan, May 14-21, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 6 - May 21: Hibiya city - Ooi Wharf Circuit, Tokyo, 148.9kmBelohvosciks in the end; Duma wins the overallBy Miwako Sasaki in Tokyo Latvian Raivis Belohvosciks (Team Universal Caffe-C.B. Immobiliare) took the final stage of the 10th Tour of Japan into Tokyo, jumping from the final breakaway to win. And his teammate Vladimir Duma, who finished in the peloton, became the first Ukrainian winner of the ToJ. The race was active from the beginning, as usual. All the Japanese riders tried to look for their last chance under the clear sky, in front of a great number of spectators. Five riders from Japan finally succeeded in making a break at 16 laps to go, and gained 2'30 quickly: Yukiya Arashiro (Team Vang Cycling), Koki Shimbo (Aisan Racing Team), Koji Nagano (Team Matrix Powertag-Specialized), Yasutaka Tashiro (Team Bridgestone-Anchor) and Shinri Suzuki(Miyata Subaru), who was 5th place in the points classification and there were three sprint points today. Suzuki had 21 points before the start, and was nine points down on the points leader Duma. "I broke away for the point jersey," he said. "My breakaway companions knew it, so they allowed me to get all the points." Therefore Suzuki added 15 points to his total before the break was caught by the peloton at three laps to go, and grabbed the blue points jersey as a result. The winning breakaway attacked from the peloton at two laps to go. It was impressive, containing Kazakh Andrey Mizourov and Alexandre Dyachenko (Cycling Team Capec), Martin Velits (Team Konica Minolta), Arashiro (again) and Belohvosciks, who would be awarded the most aggressive rider if the prize existed for this Japanese race. "I worked hard in all the stages of this race," he said. "Also today I did it all day. So our team director allowed me to try to take a stage if I could." On the other hand, Mizourov also looked for a win before he went back to Europe. "My condition is medium now, because I couldn't prepare enough before I came to Japan," said the Kazakh before the start. Although he couldn't add more victories to his excellent palmares, he got third place in the final general classification after he finished in the break. "Mi piace Giappone (I like Japan)," said Duma, who held the green leader's jersey since stage 2, to the many spectators that gathered for the final ceremony of the protocol. "I'm very happy to come to Japan with an excellent team. My main objective was the general classification before the start the race, but I also could win a stage in Nara, thanks to the team who worked hard for me." It was the first time that 34 year-old Duma won the final classification of a stage race, after he won some stages in Europe (Tour de Suisse in 1998, Giro d'Abruzzo in 1999 and 2000, Regio Tour in 2003) and one-day races (Ukrainian championship in 1998 and 2000, GP Prato in 2002). It was also the first success of this season for his Italian Team, Universal Caffe-C.B. Immobiliare, and they said, "We want to come back to Japan soon, for the Japan Cup in October next time if possible. Duma also can win that race!"
