Tour of Japan - 2.2Japan, May 14-21, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - May 20: Japan Cycle Sports Center loop, Izu, 110.5kmLloyd takes stage, Duma confirms GC leadBy Miwako Sasaki in Izu Australian Matthew Lloyd (South Australia.com-AIS) won the fifth stage of the 10th Tour of Japan, beating Japanese Tomoya Kano (Skil-Shimano) in the two man sprint. Ukrainian Vladimir Duma (Team Universal Caffe-C.B. Immobiliare) finished in front of the peloton, just one minute behind the break, and kept his green leader's jersey. The first typhoon visited Japan yesterday. It was weak today, but the small storm hit the fifth stage in Izu. Fortunately, the heavy rain stopped just before the start, but still a strong wind was blowing all day. The first half of the course was held on the circuit at the Japan Cycle Sports Center, five laps of 8km, and then, 70.48km on the hilly highway. The break was made quickly after the start: Alexandre Dyachenko (Cycling Team Capec), Hanco Kachelhoffer (Team Konica Minolta), Shinichi Fukushima and Miyataka Shimizu (Team Vang Cycling), Yasutaka Tashiro (Team Bridgestone-Anchor), and Kano. The break had a minute to the peloton, controlled by Italian Team Universal Caffe-C.B. Immobiliare. Dyachenko went to back to the peloton before the race left the circuit to the highway, where the wind was blowing at about 25 km/h. Five riders gained over two minutes advantage at 50km to go. Lloyd also worked in front of the peloton, and when he got to the head of the peloton, the wind changed from a headwind to a tailwind, and he didn't hesitate to use this chance. The Australian jumped from the peloton and chased down the break. Lloyd joined the break at 20 km to go, and soon, he attacked from the break with Japanese Kano. "It was all I could do to follow to Lloyd in the final 15 km," said the Japanese. In fact, he didn't have the energy for the sprint. So it was an easy finale for Lloyd after the hard race. "Today, I was very eager to make a move, to try to win a stage," said Lloyd after the race. "It was hard conditions today, but it paid off." Lloyd already won the Tour of Wellington last year, and was 7th in the Herald Sun Tour. Now he is also fifth on GC in the Tour of Japan. The final stage will be held in Tokyo tomorrow, on a flatter course. It's the last chance for the Japanese to join the international stage winners in the Tour of Japan: Hong Kong, Ukraine, Italy, South Africa and Australia!
