Tour of Japan - 2.2Japan, May 14-21, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - May 19: Mount Fuji ITT, 11.4kmSweet paradise for the young gunAugustyn wins the hardest stage in JapanBy Miwako Sasaki John-Lee Augustyn (Team Konica Minolta) won the fourth stage of the 10th Tour of Japan, a mountain time trial on Mount Fuji. The 19 year-old was fifth in the same race last year, in 42'05, but he could climb faster this year and did it in 40'56. It was also his first victory as a professional. The course of the time trial up the highest mountain in Japan was 11.4km in length, starting from 800m altitude and finishing at 2000m. The altitude gap was 1200m and the average gradient was over 10.5 percent. And at 1 km to go, the slope steepened to a leg breaking 22 percent. It was rainy and cold day. 91 riders started the race, separated into three waves, and the race had an hour and a half break between each group. Cyclo-cross man Kevin Pauwels (Fidea Cycling Team) finished in 44'54, and took the lead in the first group. Before the race started in Osaka, World Cyclo-cross Champion Erwin Vervecken (Fidea Cycling Team) told Cyclingnews, "We came here to ride a time trial." He was joking a little, but the cyclo-cross riders did well in the hilly race in Japan. Even time trial specialist Raivis Belohvosciks (Team Universal Caffe-C.B. Immobiliare) who finished in 45'00 in the second group, couldn't break Pauwels' time. After 61 riders finished, Vervecken was still in 5th place, in 47'00. But the first 30 riders on G.C. were better than the cyclo-cross men (natuurlijk). Young climber Augustyn finished first in 40'56 and the green leader's jersey of Vladimir Duma (Team Universal Caffe-C.B. Immobiliare) was second, 1'01 behind Augustyn. Last year's stage winner Andrey Mizourov (Cycling Team Capec) was third in 42'55. Now the young boy from South Africa wearing the red mountains jersey today is close to the green leader's jersey, only 16 seconds behind Ukrainian Duma. Tomorrow will be the final chance for Augustyn and his team, Konica Minolta. The 5th stage will be held in Izu, another hilly course, and that last tough stage of the Tour of Japan.
