Tour of Japan - 2.2Japan, May 14-21, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - May 17: Iida Station - Shimohisakata Circuit - Matsuo Stadium, South-Shinshu, 155.3kmDi Nucci has first win as a pro in JapanBy Miwako Sasaki Italian Daniele Di Nucci has sprinted to victory in the third stage of the 10th Tour of Japan into South-Shinshu, beating the first stage winner Kam Po Wong (Hong Kong, China) and Japanese Shinri Suzuki (Miyata-Subaru). The race was started on the first lap of 12 of the 11.6 km hilly circuit, where the breakaway was established. The members were Alexandr Dymovskikh (Cycling Team Capec), Yoshimasa Hirose (Skil-Shimano), Michael Ford (South Australia.com-AIS), David McCann (Giant Asia Racing Team), Takashi Miyazawa (Team Vang Cycling) and Taichi Moriyama (Miyata-Subaru). The break had an advantage over over 1'00 with nine laps to go, and Team Universal Caffe-C.B. Immobiliare, which had the race leader Vladimir Duma, controlled the peloton. It started raining at five laps to go, and the break was finally caught by the peloton, prompting many counter attacks. The first group was decreased to about 20 riders in the final laps. All the favourites were in the first group, including green leader's jersey Duma, Andrey Mizourov (Cycling Team Capec), the Velits twins (Team Konica Minolta), Yukihiro Doi and Tomoya Kano (Skil-Shimano), and Matthew Lloyd (South Australia.com-AIS). But young Di Nucci was the best sprinter in the group, and crossed the finish line first. The Italian comes from Formia (Latina), and will turn 25 next Monday. Di Nucci turned professional this year after winning eight races last year in Grassi-Marco Pantani, including the G.P. Inda (1.2). He was already third in Sunday's flatter stage, and today's stage was his first professional win. The general classification didn't change today, but there is the Mount Fuji Time Trial schedule for Friday, after another transfer day. Mizourov won the tough time trial last year, doing the 11.4 km ascent in a time of 40 minutes and 27 seconds. But he couldn't get the leader's jersey from Felix Cardenas, as the Colombian had 1'37 advantage to Mizourov at that time. Now, the Kazakh is only 52 seconds behind Duma. Although the Ukrainian had many experience in the Giro d'Italia (he finished the Grand Tour seven times, and was 36th on GC in 2001 and 2002), Mizourov has a chance to get the green jersey. And many riders still have the same chance too. The race will be confirmed on Friday.
