Trusov – a Cipo or a Cannibal?

I’m afraid that this series of race reports looks more and more like a TV adventure series script: every time a hero goes through a new set of different-looking traps and snares, but the same happy ending is unavoidable as he’s sure to win by the very nature of the genre.

On a very speedy suburban street circuit where the average speed jumps over 45 km/h and the peloton zooms by along the finishing straight at 70 km/h you don’t expect a long-lasting breakaway - well, believe it or not, there was one. Former track points race world champion Volodymyr Rybin paired up with former junior world champion Sergey Kolesnikov and fled away to take advantage of a drag open to cross-wind.

Kolesnikov definitely went after the intermediate sprint points jersey, and the Ukrainian didn’t contest any of the flying finishes in order not to break a steady pace. But the race on the whole was too fast for the break to hold on until the last lap; Sergey was first to understand that, and he returned to the main pack while Volodymyr fought on for some two laps before throwing in the towel too. The peloton whizzed past the last corner...and Nikolay Trusov is at the front again. This time no photo finish is necessary, the undefeatable sprinter has more than a bike’s length to his credit.

Not only undefeatable, but indefatigable too. In his post-race interview he promises to fight on for the overall title. This athletic tall fellow looks poorly adapted to a stage like the next one, held on the roller-coaster Krylatskoye Olympic circuit. People have started to compare him with Mario Cipollini at his best (minding the league, of course). Probably they have to put in some corrections, for his appetite and the desire to win on every terrain makes him more similar to Eddy Merckx…
