It’s a double!

For all his far-sightedness, Oleg Tinkov hadn’t ever imagined his team would be so dominant. The circuit around the Kremlin, at the very heart of Russian capital, is well-known internationally. Not solely because of lots of tourist attractions, but also for the Master’s Criterium held there in 1995 soon after the Tour de France. Miguel Indurain won in the wake of his, as it turned out, last Tour crown.
Since then this lap has a reputation as being a tough course, where for the most part race races are won in an unpredictable bunch sprint. Set in an unparalleled architectural surrounding, this stage followed the familiar scenario: the main field stayed together, moving at a very high speed, especially between the river and Kremlin walls. It was not as if there were no attacks, just the reverse, but the Tinkoff Restaurants squad strung out the peloton all the time, catching all the breakaways which didn’t live for long. Once more 38-year-old Oleg Tinkov was aggressive in only his second road race appearance after 20 years of absence from cycling. This time he wore the St-Petersburg Lokomotiv development squad jersey.
When the chasers caught track points race bronze medal winner Vasili Kiryienka after his impressive solo, the already high speed increased even further. Moscow teams built a train in order to lead out their best sprinters. On the last lap, after a descent done at the maximum speed of 76 km/h into a right-hander there was a major pileup that destroyed the order. Following his winner’s instinct, Nikolay Trusov outsprinted former Russian pro champion, Oleg Grishkin, famous for his incredible turn of speed. 10 bonus seconds allowed Nikolay to consolidate his lead. There was unfortunately a fly in the Tinkoff team ointment, however –Alexander Serov, one of the most winning riders this year, the squad’s main hope in the general classification, got caught in that mass crash, suffering concussions and deep abrasions.
