Chicchi takes first pro win
Francesco Chicchi (Quick.Step-Innergetic) has won his first professional victory by taking the opening stage of the Driedaagse Van West Vlaanderen in Bellegem. The Italian sprinter beat Jeremy Hunt (Unibet.com) and Gerald Ciolek (Wiesenhof-AKUD Team) at the end of the 169.5 km leg.
"I am over the moon - Belgium has brought me good luck once again," said Chicchi, who won the U23 World Championships in Zolder 2002. "I've been waiting for this win for a long time. The finish line was situated about 500 metres after a climb. [teammate Wouter] Weylandt made his move at the foot of the ascent with both Pozzato and myself hot on his wheels. I was able to find a small gap in order to pass him and went on to launch myself into the final sprint. Once again our team was fantastic today. I have great faith in my teammates, knowing I can count on their help makes things a lot easier. I know they value me. When they see that I am in a position to win it is fantastic that they give me that responsibility and back me up."
Tomorrow's stage and finish will also favour the sprinters. "I hope to be the main man of the race tomorrow," Chicchi added. "With any luck I'll be able to defend my first place, ready to give it my all during the final stage."
