Stage 3 - March 12: Tower District Criterium, 90/50 min

NRC in Full Swing with Central Valley Classic

By Mark Zalewski, North American editor

Fresno California was the sight of the fourth National Racing Calendar event of the year, with the three stages of the Central Valley Classic playing a big role in establishing the first round of NRC women's rankings as well as giving the domestic men's squads another chance to show their stuff.

On the men's side of racing, the early season racing resulted in a few firsts. The Jelly Belly Team team notched their first victory in the circuit race with a sprint win by Alex Candelario following a leadout by Matty Rice and Brice Jones. Following close behind was Health Net-Maxxis Gord Fraser, the defending champion of the omnium.

On Sunday, the Tower District criterium saw Fraser finally take his first win ahead of two Toyota-United sprinters in Ivan Dominguez and Tony Cruz and two Jelly Belly sprinters, again Brice Jones and Alex Candelario in a photo-finish sprint. "I knew I had Ivan (Dominguez, Toyota-United), but I couldn't see what was happening on his right," Fraser explained. "But I definitely thought I had it. I guess I had just enough distance and I threw my bike at the right time." Those two top finishes for Fraser gave him the win in the omnium for the second year in a row.

With the Tour of California being the 800 lb. gorilla weighing the NRC calendar for the men, the top five did not change. But on the women's side, the Central Valley Classic was worth a lot more. The opening time trial, changed due to weather, saw Christine Thorburn (Webcor Platinum) taking the win, with two other teammates in the top four and TEAm Lipton's Kristin Armstrong spoiling the podium in second place.

The second stage road race culminated in a field sprint with Victory Brewing setting the pace, delivering Laura Yoisten to the line first followed closely by Colavita-Cooking Light's newest professional Sarah Tillotson. ""It was fun to go from 'Sarah, the support rider to Sarah the supported rider!'" Tillotson told Cyclingnews. "To have Susan Palmer-Komar leading me out, how cool is that?"

For the final day it was all Victory Brewing, as the ladies took the top three spots in a field sprint while keeping Yoisten protected near the front. Lauren Franges led the team's two Lauras, Yoisten and Bowles, to the podium sweep. Meanwhile, Yoisten's second place secured her the omnium win. "I am very pleased with they way our team has come together to race," said team director Mike Tamayo. "Our goal was to set a tempo for the team from the start and our goal now is to keep it going. We had a great race this weekend and we will be focused on building our team and our strengths further."

The win by Yoisten also gives her the lead in the NRC standings with Colavita-Cooking Light's Dotsie Bausch in second after her win at McLane Pacific. Colavita-Cooking Light has two in the top five thanks to the strong ride by Sarah Tillotson, sitting in fifth.
