Tour de Toona - NEUSA, July 24-30, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - July 26: Johnstown - Altoona, 158.8 kmMenzies, Armstrong in yellow at ToonaMen: Pipp bests everyone as Menzies regains leadBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor in Altoona, PA The point-to-point stage from Johnstown to Altoona in the 2006 Tour de Toona lived up to its usual role, separating the true racers from the 'just happy to be here' riders, with two KOMs doing the dirty work. An early break looked to be on its way to riding away from the field, but not everyone agreed and an eventual field sprint of the shrunken peloton resulted in Frank Pipp (TargeTraining) while his old teammate Karl Menzies (Health Net-Maxxis) took the yellow jersey back from Mariano Friedick (Toyota-United Pro). "Gaining the yellow jersey back was good," said Health Net-Maxxis' director Jeff Corbett. "We were trying to set up Henderson for the stage win but we did not have a one kilometer to go sign, which was our landmark. We got to the left had sweeper and it was only 300 meters from there. We were all taken by surprise because the sign was not out." Early in the race a large and selective break developed well before the first KOM, with many GC contenders including Chris Baldwin (Toyota-United Pro), Valery Kobzarenko and Glen Chadwick (Navigators Insurance), Jeff Louder (Health Net-Maxxis), Predrag Prokic, (AEG-Toshiba-JetNetwork), Davide Frattini (Colavita-Sutter Home) and Dominique Perras (Equipe de Quebec). Navigators Insurance DS Ed Beamon thought the stage and overall was all but decided among these riders, but to his surprise the break began to argue. "Theoretically that was the break that should have gotten 20 minutes and that's it. Health Net and Toyota had their best GC riders and we were happy with our riders too. The break got away and we thought it was the end of the race and no one would chase it. But Health Net did not like it and Louder did not work. Because Louder stopped working Baldwin stopped working too and that was not good for us." Health Net-Maxxis DS Jeff Corbett gave his thoughts on that break. "It is a long week. I think Louder could have done well in that break but we have several guys who are threats here. If we let that break go and Louder was working it would have twenty minutes and the race would be between those eight guys, but we didn't want to take all of our own players out of the mix right away." At this point, Beamon was talking to his riders a lot, making changes to the strategy. "Ed said one of us had to separate ourselves from the break," said Chadwick who attacked the break while his teammate monitored the rest. "Perras came across to me and the on the first KOM we worked well. He told me he was having a bad day." With Chadwick and Perras up the road and over the first KOM, Toyota-United picked up the pace making on the front, swallowing the rest of the break and nearing the leading duo near the top of Blue Knob. "We tried to get as much time as we could to the bottom of the [second] climb," said Chadwick. "I set my own tempo up the climb and Perras could stay. I got the points and waited for a group of four guys to come across." As the race ascended Blue Knob, Toyota hit the gas and put the peloton into difficulty. "We discussed going to make the climb really hard," said Toyota-United Pro DS Harm Jansen. "Ivan Stevic did a good job today and was very strong. Baldwin and Wherry got away in a group of five and when that came back Stevic got away which started to crack riders from Health Net. We put everything into putting a lot of pressure on the other teams on the climb and after the climb." Chadwick lasted long enough to take the KOM points and continued with the remaining leaders. "I started working with them Valerie and two Toyotas," he said. "There were no Health Nets so they had to chase us and had to spend a lot of energy and lost a few guys until they caught us with 15 km to go." "We were not in the other breaks so we needed to get them back," said Corbett. "We didn't want to blow the race apart today because it take a lot of gas to stay out there and you don't gain a lot of time." The pressure on Health Net continued as three more riders got away, with Davide Frattini active again. "When they caught the break I followed Stevic and Lagutin with 20 km to go. They caught us ten km to go but Kobzarenko jumped again and I followed that too. They caught us with three km to go where everyone was positioning for the sprint." Unfortunate for teams like Health Net, the three kilometer to go sign was not followed with the tradition one kilometer sign, causing some confusion for riders who were not familiar with the finish. "In the finish it was all back together," said Menzies. "Tim [Johnson] was leading me out and Hendy was on my wheel. Navigators attacked and when we went around to the left turn it was three hundred meters to go! But, we were still looking for the one-kilometer to go sign! Frank Pipp dove the inside of Navigators and I went around the outside with two hundred meters to go." But it was too little, too late with Pipp enjoying a comfortable lead around the final bend. "I had just been dangling off the front group over the KOM," said Pipp. "I actually blew up a little! Health Net had tried to control everything but everyone was attacking. I had two teammates attacking while I recovered. At about 300 meters to go I came by and got on to the Navigators. Then it was a sudden turn and I kind of slammed my breaks." Pipp was then able to dive the inside line and go direct to the finish line. Pipp's win gives him a ten second time bonus which launches him up the GC to second place behind Menzies, who takes the yellow jersey back from Friedick. "It was somewhat to be expected, it was a hard day it was hot and the last climb put Mariano into difficulty," said Jansen. Only twenty-six riders are now within one minute of the lead as the race heads into two circuit races before climbing Blue Knob again in Saturday's penultimate stage. Women: Armstrong flies solo into yellowBy Kirsten Robbins in Altoona, PA TEAm Lipton's U.S. national champion Kristin Armstrong made it look easy today, riding away from her competitors up the final QOM climb and claiming a lead of more than three minutes by the finish line. Colavita-Cooking Light's Tina Pic won the field sprint followed by Team Biovail's Alex Wrubleski after a shattered field solidified itself for the finish. The field hit the final climb fast today on the QOM hunt for Colavita Cooking Light's Dotsie Bausch. Bausch attacked the field after the second intermediate sprint line and gained a maximum of forty-five seconds. But she was brought back partly by a chasing TEAm Lipton and partly by Webcor-Platinum's Katheryn Curi and TEAm Lipton's Kori Seehafer's successful bridge. "I wasn't sure about staying away after the climb for the entire distance but I was going to give it a try because I did not want to come to the line with too many sprinters," said Kristin Armstrong. "I thought that the sooner I try to leave the climbers then the more time on the climb I have to try to get away. So I attacked when we caught Kori, Dotsie, and Katheryn." "Once a chasing group gets over the top of a climb they have a chance to organize and chase more so I wanted as much time on my own before that happened. I saw Alex and Erinne right on me but I knew if I gave it one more try that would be enough for them. It sometimes hurts me to do that too but I know that I have to try." Armstrong raced the last twenty miles of the race alone rapidly gaining time on the chasing riders. Webcor-Platinum's Erinne Willock and Team Biovail's Alex Wrubleski crested the climb shortly after Armstrong but their power of two could not match Armstrong. "Erinne and I worked well together but we knew it was going to take a little bit more than what we were doing to catch her," said Canadian National champion Alex Wrubleski. " She is a really strong climber and we just watched her get smaller and smaller." Armstrong attributed part of her impressive performance today to her power out put and equipment. "When I was by myself I just tried to focus on my numbers Thank goodness for my SRM," said Armstrong. "I was trying to keep it as close to three hundred watts as possible. It is a good tool for me because every time I see the numbers go down I just pick it up a little bit." The small separations in the field came back together with approximately fifteen kilometers to go and the race was on for second and third place. "Around the final corner it was Tina and then me and it stayed that way to the end," said Wrubleski. "I'm definitely gaining a lot more confidence in my ability and I am learning more at every race." The action today began ten miles into the race when Colavita-Cooking Light's sprinter Gina Grain attacked from the field and brought with her Team Biovail's Stephanie Bourbeau. Later, Equipe du Quebec's Emily Roy joined the pair. The Canadian trio was caught by a chase group of four approaching the first QOM, twenty- seven miles later. In that chase of four riders was Victory Brewing's Rachel Heal who captured full points on the QOM. Heal by passed Colavita-Cooking Light's climber Dotsie Bausch by three points in the climber's competition at this point. "I was going for the QOM points but I didn't actually think we would catch the three riders ahead," said Rachel Heal. "I realized that when we got closer to the mountain that I could go for it and take maximum points. The next QOM climb was more about the overall race and the QOM points were secondary through there. I couldn't hold it with the three leaders but I made sure I took fourth place points out of the group I was with." After the QOM there was a group of us working together. I had two teammates, Lipton had one and Colavita had one. But the group caught us and we all started working to catch Erinne, Alex and Alison with twenty kilometers to the finish." Armstrong has a significant lead over the next placed riders on the G.C but does not take this lead for granted. "I have a strong team here and they can protect me," said Armstrong. "The next strongest person on our team has to be the strongest and highest placed person in any break and if they get the yellow jersey than that is great. But no break will go with out our top riders in it." PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Mark Zalewski/Cyclingnews.com
