Polynormand - 1.1France, July 30, 20062005 Results Results Past winners Anthony Charteau keeps Tour de France status reigningBy Jean-François Quénet in St-Martin-de-Landelles It's now France's first racing rendez-vous one week after the finish of the Tour de France: the former criterium of St-Martin-de-Landelles in the village of legendary race commentator Daniel Mangeas in Normandy is the third last leg of the French cup. There is traditionally a big difference between the riders who have raced the Tour de France and those who haven't. Successively, Jérôme Pineau, Sylvain Chavanel and Philippe Gilbert have proved it. Now Anthony Charteau is one more on the list. "But cornering was a problem for me," the Crédit Agricole rider explained. "Speeding up after every curve isn't something I was used to at the Tour de France. It took me a lot of energy. It hurt me more than climbing actually." Charteau, who is known as the schoolmate of French national soccer team third goal keeper Mickaël Landreau, wasn't a major role player for Crédit Agricole at the Tour de France. But he worked a lot and Thor Hushovd appreciated what he did. "The team trusts me for secondary events though", Charteau said. He was afraid of repeating the loss of GP Plumelec in May, but he managed to outsprint Bert Scheirlinckx in front of the enthusiastic crowd. The Belgian rider from the Geraardsbergen area said he was "very proud of himself". He's no stranger to French cup races. "It's a pity I can't score points, he added. I'd be happy to join a French team for that. My brother Staf already rides for Cofidis." In the absence of runner-up Lilian Jégou, who is still recovering from a broken leg during the Tour de Suisse, AG2R's Lloyd Mondory increased his lead at the French cup. He was highly encouraged racing only 30km away from home. How it unfoldedThe riders talked about taking it easy for a while on the start line but didn't do it. As soon as the start was given, attacks went. The little rain at the beginning of the event inspired a few of the guys who had suffered the heat wave previously. Beach boy Ben Johnson from Queensland was one of the most active cyclists in the early part of the race, and again, he felt the right move was going when Anthony Charteau (Crédit Agricole) and Arnaud Gérard (Française des Jeux) took off with 75km to go. Yann Pivois (Bretagne-Jean Floc'h) was the first to join them, then Johnson with his team-mate Nicolas Crosbie (Agritubel), David Le Lay (Bretagne-Jean Floc'h) and Igor Abakoumov (Jartazi). Bert Scheirlinckx (Jartazi) went across to the leaders later, but Laurens Ten Dam (Unibet.com) and Sébastien Duret (Bretagne-Jean Floc'h) couldn't, they only caught the guys dropping off from the front group, Gérard, Johnson and Le Lay. With one lap to go (12.5km), former French amateur champion Rémi Pauriol (Crédit Agricole), French cup leader Lloyd Mondory (AG2R) and Nicolas Roche (Cofidis) tried to bridge the gap as well, but the win would now be played between Charteau, Pivois, Scheirlinckx, Le Lay and Crosbie. Crosbie got dropped, came back and attacked. It was bluff. Charteau attacked as well in the côte de la Pigeonnière but he had to do it again and he never got rid of Scheirlinckx, so he had to use his sprinting abilities to claim his first success this year.
