Cascade Classic - NEBend Oregon, USA, July 12-16, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Next Stage Stage 1 - July 12: Ironhorse-A Brooks Resources Development Prineville RR, 92 milesWherry's back on topBy Kirsten Robbins in Bend, Oregon A cumulative effort between Navigators, Toyota-United and Health Net shattered the field during stage one of Cascade Classic. And the game between the three powerful teams began at the base of the one-mile climb up Pilot Butte to the finish. "Chris rode a very smart last mile climb to the finish," said Toyota-United directeur sportif Harm Jansen. "Baldwin countered one of several attacks at the base of the climb while Chris just maintained his steady pace. Chris is looking very very strong right now and it is great to see him power away like that." Wherry maintained his steady pace up the climb to take the win by 15 seconds over Sergey Lagutin (Navigators) and 19 seconds over Jeff Louder (Health Net). The 92-mile trek began with several attacks keeping the pace high and the field in single file until the first hot spot sprint line. "There was a lot of activity in the first part of the race and just after the hot spot prime things settled down - that's when Gordon McCauley attacked and the field let him go," said Navigators directeur sportif Ed Beamon. Successful Living's New Zealand national champion Gordon McCauley gained a maximum of six minutes on the field coming into the first climb of the day, fifty-five miles into the stage. "There was a climb half way into the race and the one rider had a large gap on the field," said Beamon. "We wanted to wait for that climb and set a hard tempo to split the field. Before the climb Toyota-United made a few attacks then we got thing organized and rode the rest of the climb at a fast pace. Us, Health Net and Toyota-United had the bulk of our teams in the front group." The wind played a major factor in the tactics of the last half of the stage. All three teams: Navigators, Health Net and Toyota-United independently organized their teams at the front of the remaining field. "The weather forecast said the wind would pick up in the afternoon," said Jansen. "There was a long head wind section after the climb where the teams were riding tempo at the front." "Eighteen miles to go there was a left hand turn and the cross winds would be very strong. I told they guys to try to split up the group on this four-mile stretch. It was our objective to make it pretty hard. We have a very strong team and we wanted to take the edge off some of the other riders before the last climb," said Jansen. Once the peloton made the left hand turn into the cross winds all three teams worked to further dismantle the field. There were only nineteen riders in the front group approaching the climb up Pilot Butte to the finish. "Our plan was to set up Grajalez but when we turned into the climb Toyota-United was setting a pace into the access road," said Beamon. "Grajalez attacked when the climb at the very bottom, which might have been too early. He had a twenty-meter gap and the group fell to pieces. Wherry and Baldwin went after him and Wherry was able to keep going. It was basically a drag race up that climb and Wherry won." "The next two days are hard stages with hard climbing. It is a fairly hard mountain top finish," said Beamon. "We have a few guys who are climbing well, Wherry and Baldwin are riding well and Health Net is also in good position. So, we will take a shot at closing the gap to the leaders jersey tomorrow." "We didn't get a win today but we had guys place really well and who are in contention for the over all," said Health Net Directeur Sportif Jeff Corbet. "Tomorrow is a new stage here at Cascade Classic and so it is hard to make predictions. I think the general classification will be decided on Friday's stage and the time trial. I also think this will be a real team battle because we all have good guys here. For now the ball is in Toyota-United's court."
