Fuyu Li wins international Tour of Thailand

Marco Polo Cycling Team report

Chinese Marco Polo Cycling Team rider Fuyu Li has won the overall classification of the international Tour of Thailand. In stage 3 Fuyu Li took over the yellow leader's jersey, which he and the Marco Polo Cycling Team defended until the finish of the tour today in Bangkok. Fuyu Li could celebrate Chinese New Year with a win.

"I am so happy to show that I have the international level to win a stage race," said Li. "Today is a special day for China because the Chinese New Year starts. It is great to win this Tour of Thailand today!"

Fuyu Li's victory was not only a great success for Marco Polo, it also marks the first time that a Chinese rider has won an international stage race outside of China. It's also the second UCI ranked event that Marco Polo has won this season.

Fuyu Li won the gold medal at the China Games just recently in 2005. In Marco Polo, he gets the chance to improve his international performances. As preparation, he raced the Tour of South China Sea, trained with the team in the training camp in Guangzhou (south China) and raced the Tour of Siam, last week.

Fuyu showed great form already in the last stage of the Tour of Siam. After working for Tour leader Thomas Rabou of Marco Polo for a few days, he managed to still get in an 8th place in the hard uphill finish of the final stage. Thomas Rabou won the individual classification and the Marco Polo team took the team classification in the Tour of Siam.
