Tour of Siam - 2.2Thailand, January 15-21, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 5 - January 19: Ranong - Khao Lak (Phang Nga), 197.30 kmMongolian triumph in stage 5By Melissa Smith In a fierce battle to the finish line, Mongolian rider Jamsran Ulzii-Orshikh (Marco Polo) crossed for first today in Stage 5 - the second longest stage of the tour. He was followed closely by the previous stage winner Takashi Miyazawa (Japan National Team) and in third position was British rider Daniel Lloyd (Giant Asia). The yellow jersey remains with City of Perth's Edmund Hollands. The entourage arrived in the town of Khao Lak at 3pm. The race finished at the Tsunami Monument where a police boat, washed up by the wave, remains approximately 1 km from the water. Khao Lak is currently in a re-building phase after the devastating effects of the tsunami just over a year ago. Stage 5 was another long day in the heat for the riders. This did not stop a group of 15 making a break in the very first few kilometres of the race. Shinichi Fukushima and Takashi Miyazawa from the Japan National Team were among the leading riders. It was part of their race plan today to keep the City of Perth Team working hard for most of the race in order to attempt to regain the yellow jersey. The City of Perth Team worked tirelessly and successfully protected their leader Edmund Hollands' grasp of the yellow jersey. They were unable to bring back the break due to the large number of riders, but that wasn't crucial to their end goals. Shinichi Fukushima told Cyclingnews afterwards, "The breakaway group worked very well together. Everyone was enthusiastic to get to the finish line before the peloton." Shinichi said that he tried to attack the group but Jamsran made it impossible for him, following his every move. "He is a very strong rider and he worked very hard in the breakaway, he deserved the win today," said Shinichi. Stage 6 will begin in Khao Lak and travel to the final destination of the tour, Phuket. It will include two intermediate sprints. With only seconds separating the first four riders on GC, the leader's yellow jersey is still up for grabs. There are only two days remaining, tomorrow will surely be an exciting stage.
