Tour of Siam - 2.2Thailand, January 15-21, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Next Stage Stage 1 - January 15: Bangkok Circuit Race, 85 kmFukushima 1-2 in BangkokBy Melissa Smith Shinichi Fukushima (Japanese National Team) took out the first stage of the 2006 Tour of Siam, which began today in the bustling capital city of Bangkok. The Japanese National Team demonstrated their strength taking out first and second places respectively. Shinichi's brother Koji crossed the line in second place, after the pair had broken away from the peloton. Shinichi said that it was very hot and a hard race. "My brother kept attacking and I was in the 15 rider chasing group. I attacked to get across and we rode hard to the finish." Shinichi has been back in training for a month after breaking his collarbone in the Herald Sun Tour late last year. "I'm very happy to come back and win the first stage," he said, adding that he hopes to maintain his GC position but said there are many days to go and he will take it a day at a time. How it unfoldedThe pre-race ceremony at the Royal Plaza included a cultural display from the local Thai performers. The large procession of riders and entourage took the scenic route past the Grand Palace to the race start with local riders. Stage 1 began at 12pm in 36 degree heat. The 142 strong peloton consisted of 29 teams from Asia, Europe and Australia. The first 20km of the 12 lap circuit saw many strong attacks, only to be chased down and swallowed up by the peloton. On the fourth lap a group of 17 riders managed to break away. However, Koji and his brother powered away from this group in an awesome display of persistence and strength, putting minutes into the main peloton. The cooperation between the brothers was perfect, of course, and Shinichi crossed the line ahead of Koji to take the first yellow jersey. Tomorrow, the second stage runs from Hua Hin to Prachuap Khiri Khan. The mainly flat 117.2km journey includes one intermediate sprint. The action is sure to be hot and thick just like the weather.
