6th Copa America de Ciclismo - 1.2Sao Paolo, Brazil, January 8, 20062005 Results Results Past winners Men - Santos does the doubleBy Peter Ahm, NewsBike Nilceu Santos (Scott) has repeated his 2005 victory in the Copa America de Ciclismo, beating Rodrigo Brito (São Caetano) and Hector Figueiras (São Caetano) in a bunch sprint. Copa America opens the Brazilian season and takes place on the Formula 1 track in the city of Sao Paulo - Interlagos. A circuit of 4.3 km/2.68 miles done eight times for a total of 34.4 km . The race is short, due to live coverage from the biggest television network in Brazil - Rede Globe. It is an extremely important race for the Brazilian due to the fact that it is one of the only international cycling races in Brazil. Copa America is on the UCI calendar as a 1.2 race. With riders from Argentina, Venezuela, Uruguay and the US, the race is bound to be tough considering the distance, the heat and the excitement of the race, not to mention Murilo Fischer and Luciano Pagliarini (Saunier Duval/Spain), top Brazilian pros in Europe, and also a strong field in the female division. The prize money for the winner is approx USD$3000 - a lot by Brazilian standards. Besides the best "foreign" Brazilians, both in male and female divisions, all the best Brazilian riders were racing - like team Scott (San Jose Dos Campos), Extra (Suzano), Memorial (Santos) and Sao Caetano. The best possible Brazilian field was ready to go. Murilo Fischer said before the race that he would do everything possible to win this prestigious Brazilian race, saying that he wanted to return to Europe as a winner. But it didn't quite go like that. The first lap of the race was run in 5'20 on this hilly, tough circuit. Each lap consists of an intermediate sprint, meaning that the first and second riders get prize money and also points towards a team competition, where the best team wins a motorcycle. The race is only eight laps and with the intermediate sprints each lap, the average speed was high. There were constant attacks by the different teams, either to get the intermediate sprint or to get 10 seconds of fame on live television. As always, the race is intense and again, as always, no serious breakaways could hold onto the finish, so a mass sprint was in sight. Team Scott with 13 riders in the peloton wanted the victory badly, since Scott won the race in 2005 with Nilceu "The Flash" Santos. And with the team's strength, once again Scott succeeded in bringing Nilceu to the right position in the sprint and he won by a wheel. The Brazilian "foreigners" did not manage to get on the podium, but these riders are just beginning their preparation for the European season,. Women - Clemilda also doublesThe women's race was five laps for a total of 21.5 km/13.3 miles with an average speed of 37.5 km/h. The female division was dominated by the Fernandes family - also Brazilian "foreigners" on the pro circuit in Europe. Riders from Argentina and Venezuela and the best domestic Brazilians were racing and tried to prevent another Clemilda Fernandes victory, but it was to no avail and Clemilda crossed the line first with her sister Janildes in 5th place.
