Tour of Utah - NEUtah, USA, August 7-12, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - August 8: Provo - Tooele, 149 kmWherry takes the sprint in windy TooeleBy Steve Medcroft U.S. national champion Chris Wherry (Toyota United) kicked ahead of Jeff Louder (Health Net/Maxxis) and yellow jersey wearer Sergey Lagutin (Navigators Insurance) with two kilometers to go to take stage two of the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah presented by Zions Bank. Wind and heat had kept heads cool in the pack throughout the day and even though two breaks escaped during the 92-mile stage (one containing Mike Sayers of Health Net and Ryan Yee of Team Successful Living that lasted until the final five miles), teams played a conservative race, choosing to protect their star climbers in anticipation of the epic altitude racing coming later in the week. The other windy city Lining up for the start, a constant headwind had more than one rider worried that the field could split out on the exposed and open highways of Tuesday's race so when the first attack of the day got away - containing Mike Dietrich (Kodakgallery.com/Sierra Nevada) and Daniel Ramsey (Team Successful Living) - it was given a short leashand reigned in just ten miles later. Every counter-attack was summarily nuetralized. "No-one wanted to really throw it down early on," Jeff Louder (Health Net/Maxxis) said in the post-race press conference. "The wind could have been worse, but it was a long race and it seemed like people wanted to decide things later on." The conservatism existed because all eyes are on the mountain stages later this week. Knowing that Navigators is fielding three climbing threats at the Tour of Utah (Lagutin, Swindlehurst and Caesar Grejales), teams were not about to let the owners of the yellow jersey have a total day off. "The objective today was to make Navigators use as many guys as possible," said Louder's teammate and U.S. professional circuit veteran Mike Sayers. "We dont want them to have fresh guys for Scott (Moninger) and Jeff (Louder) to go up agianst (in the mountains)." Health Net/Maxxis put stress on the Navigators by sending Sayers up the road. He was joined by Ryan Yee (Team Successful Living) in a break that established a one-minute gap and held. Toyota United took a more conservative approach to the second flat stage in a row. "(Navigators) have the jersey so its on them to control the race," Wherry said. "We knew that if there was any break up the road, they would have to chase and we wouldn't have to do anything about it. So our approach was to sit back and try to stay as fresh as possible for the next couple of days." Sayers and Yee's break stayed one minute ahead of a Navigator's driven peloton until the race entered the 3.2-kilometer pan-flat tarmac road course at the Miller Motorsports track in Tooele, Utah. "I thought maybe they would give me some time," Sayers said, explaining that he had three strikes against making him a threat to anyone's overall lead. "I don't time trial very well, I'm not the best climber in the world and I'm certainly not an altitude guy. But they must have been worried so they chased hard." Which was fine by Toyota United. "The race up Mount Nebo (Thursday's stage, after Wednesday's time trial) apparantly is pretty hot, hard and long so saving any energy we can, like we did today, will hopefully get us to the end of the race in the lead." As for who on the team they are saving their energy for? "We have several guys who are riding really well," Wherry says. "Chris Baldwin is riding well. I'm riding well. Justin England is back from an injury and starting to ride well. So we have good guys to go up the hill with. The last few days are going to be so hard that the guy with the best form is going to win this race no matter what happens." So after all the tactical card-playing was over and Sayers and Yee were absorbed into the pack, Wherry struck out for his stage win on the twisting turns of the motor-racing track. "It was really windy - because we were always changing directions," he said. "So I was just trying to follow wheels, to pick the right time to hit the group because Sergey's faster than me in a sprint and I didn't want it to come down to that. I went with about two (kilometers) to go and got just the right gap." Louder and Lagutin finished on Wherry's wheel. With the bunch finish, all the general classification jerseys stay in the same hands after stage two; Lagutins - except for the King of the Mountain jersey which sits on the shoulders of Kodakgallery rider Jesse Anthony. Wednesday's stage is a short, 13-kilometer out-and-back time trial in nearby Heber, Utah. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Steve Medcroft/Cyclingnews.com
