Tattersall's Cup Tour of the Murray River - NEAustralia, August 29-September 3, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - August 30: Kerang To Cohuna, 74.7 kmKemp leads after McLachlan takes anotherBy Rob Morris A flat fast afternoon stage from Kerang to Cohuna offered nothing for the hill climbers in the tour, but instead gave the sprinters another chance to put time on the leaderboard. Again attempted breaks were nullified almost before they began, although South Australian Chris Jongewaard and Victorian Patrick Shaw did manage to skip away by 15 seconds about half way through the stage. Neither Jongewaard or Shaw are real dangers to the GC leaders, so in a way
it was surprising the peloton bothered about them all that much. The last of those four sprints was 12 km from the finish line and Canberra's Stuart Shaw and Tasmanian Wesley Sulzberger, who is the outright leader of the Tattersall's Cup, made a last ditch effort to break away. Their effort last less than 2 km and only got to about 4 seconds before the peloton sensed the finish line was not far away. In a picturesque, although somewhat technical finish in Cohuna, McLachlan just managed to get the right sprinter's line ahead of Aitken, with Egan down the outside in a wheel length third place. "I don't think I'm sprinting all that well, I just managed to get a great lead out from Zak Dempster and was in the right place at the right time and got some luck," McLachlan. The big Canberra rider is the defending champion in the Tattersall's Cup and hell bent on making up leeway on Sulzberger. McLachlan missed the recent Australian Cycling Grand Prix at Ballarat after an indifferent Tour of Gippsland in the opening event of the series. McLahlan started this week languishing in 15th place and 84 points behind Sulzberger. On provisional results, he has jumped his way into fourth position and a "gettable" 59-points adrift of the young Tasmanian. The tour continues on Thursday with its only sole stage day - a 52 km criterium in Euston, a small town just out of Robinvale over the NSW border.
