Tattersall's Cup Tour of the Murray River - NEAustralia, August 29-September 3, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 10 - September 3: Cardross kermesse, 57.6 kmTriple SulzbergerMcLachlan extends leadBy Rod Morris in Cardross Whilst overall honours were beyond him, Tasmanian Wesley Sulzberger still had a point to prove in the tour. After a successful day at Ouyen on Friday when he won both the criterium and the road stage, the 19-year-old Apple Islander, backed up to win his third stage and fourth in the whole Tattersall's Cup series. Sulzberger, sitting in seventh place overall and more than two minutes behind the leaders, posed no real threat in General Classification and was given some leeway by Robert McLachlan and David Kemp. Sulzberger was in the instigator of a breakaway group with three laps of the 57.6 km kermesse at Cardross remaining. He was soon joined by young Queenslander, Jack Anderson and then not long after Ballarat's Jason Hegert and NSW's Peter Milostic were able to bridge the gap from the peloton to Sulzberger. "I was a little surprised the bunch didn't close us down, but I suppose I was not in a position to threaten Robbie (McLachlan) or David (Kemp)" Sulzberger said. "The wind made things very difficult for everybody, it seemed to be coming across the road or straight into us, we never seemed to get a tail breeze. But that final grouped worked really well together and I'm stoked to get another win." In the final sprint home, Sulzberger was able to hold off the challenge from Hegert, while the veteran Milostic was more than happy to take third place. "I can't sprint like these young guys, so I'm far from disappointed to finish third, its good to get up on the podium," he said. Milostic has contested six previous Tattersall's Cup series and is still a very tough competitor. Earlier in the race, McLachlan and Kemp continued their tremendous tussle. From nine intermediate sprints, McLachlan won four and was second three times to pick up 18 bonus seconds, while Kemp won three sprints, was second twice and third once, scoring 14 seconds in bonus. With McLachlan crossing the final line in fifth place, he picked up a further two seconds, taking his overall lead over Kemp to 11 seconds with just the Mildura Kermesse over 66 km still to be raced. In the Tattersall's Cup, which has so far included the Tour of Gippsland and Australian Cycling Grand Prix, as well as this week's tour, Sulzberger took his tally of points to 170, 45 ahead of McLachlan, while Kemp has etched his way into third place with 111 points. The Tattersall's Cup series concludes in October with the 11 stage Tour of Tasmania.
