GP Tell - 2.2USwitzerland, August 23-27, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Stage 4 - August 27: Pfaffnau - Sursee, 154.7kmDutch double win - Austria gets the Tell-Trophy for the first timeExhaustion was an important word on the final day. 18 of 91 started riders gave up on this concluding stage. From a sporting point of view the stage was a little bit disappointing. 13 riders got away in the first part of the stage. The German national squad was the only one to have two riders in the group with Sebastian Hans and Tony Martin, the winner of this year's Thüringen-Rundfahrt. The most dangerous rider in the lead group was Swedish athlete Michael Stevenson who was 3 mins 50 secs behind overall leader Eibegger. This was the reason why the group didn't get away more than by two and a half minutes. Most of the time the lead was around two minutes. On the last climb, 15 kms in front of the finish line, Tony Martin took the lead together with the two Dutchmen Stamsnijder and Timmer. They were strong until the end. After having missed the win in the prologue by only 86 hundredths of a second, Tom Stamsnijder, the son of former cyclocross world champion Hennie, got the decision in an impressive manner. German Tony Martin had a good day and finished third. Behind Peter Velits, Miha Svab and the Swiss riders were not in the position to bring Markus Eibegger into danger. The most difficult situation the Austrian leader had lived after 40 kms, when his back-wheel punctured and none of his team-mates were present to support their colleague. It took almost 10 kilometres to get back in the peloton. Finally Eibegger celebrated the biggest win of his career and now hopes to get a contract with a professional team, as 2006 will be his last year in the under-23 category. Peter Velits he didn't appear to the final victory ceremony. He preferred to take a warming shower first and then to be present only after one hour the race had ended.... Noone was in the ceremony spot anymore only a jury-member, who fined him by a considerable amount. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Andreas Oppliger
