GP Tell - 2.2USwitzerland, August 23-27, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 1 - August 24: Sarnen - Sarnen, 139.3kmVan Emden: Again and againBy Andreas Oppliger As foreseen by the weather forecast the first stage of this year's GP Tell was held under extremely changeable weather conditions. The day started with rain showers, continued with blue skies and dry roads and finally finished under a heavy thunderstorm. The riders really had to fight against the outside conditions. The stage was a circuit of 34.7 kms that had to be done four times, including a short and slight cat.3 climb. The first three laps were dominated by a group of seven athletes containing three Swiss riders. They were caught, after having had a lead up to three minutes, by the chasing field just on the second but last crossing of the finish line in Sarnen. The 19-year old Moldavian Alexandr Pliushin and the French rider Jerome Coppel took profit from a short confusion within the peloton and got away.... but not for too long. Dutchman Jos van Emden, in his yellow jersey of the overall leader, took the pursuit of the leading duo and caught them only a few kilometres later. In the finish van Emden showed his outstanding form. He beat Pliushin after having been in the second position only 200 meters from the finish line. In this moment the "Rabo-rider" took his last chance and sprinted in a very narrow gap between the Moldavian and the borders on the left, to win over Pliushin PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Andreas Oppliger
