23rd Chris Thater Memorial Criterium - NEBinghamton, New York, USA, August 26-27, 20062005 Results Results Past winners Clarke continues roll at ThaterBy Mark Zalewski, North American Editor Navigators Insurance's Aussie sprinter Hilton Clarke continued his reign of August, winning out of a six rider breakaway at the Chris Thater Memorial Criterium in Binghamton, New York. Clarke's win marks his fourth in the month of August, winning last weekend's USPRO criterium and both races of the Tour of Elk Grove. Additionally, Navigators Insurance has cleaned up the money this month, winning the two biggest prize purses of the season. The race was held under a steady rain with the deciding breakaway going early, just over ten miles into the fifty mile race. Without any let-up from the sky, the field had little chance of catching the leading group. Clarke had teammate Ciaran Power at his side in the break that also contained, Davide Fratini (Colavita-Sutter Home), Scott Zwizanski (KodakGallery-Sierra Nevada), as well as a TargeTraining and Symmetrics rider. Unfortunately, Clarke and many of his Navigators Insurance teammates will be unable to continue their dominance next weekend at the USPRO road championships, which is now open only to U.S. citizens. And there are only three NRC events left following the championships -- the Atlanta 100K Classic, Univest Grand Prix and the Parker Main Street Omnium. Van Gilder moves on from crit nationals with Thater win The women raced in equally bad weather as the men, and had a similar outcome. A loaded breakaway got forty-five seconds on the field -- and with the top teams all represented, the race would come down to these seven riders. Out of this break, Rachel Heal (Victory Brewing) attacked on the final hill, but sprinter Laura Van Gilder (TEAm Lipton) was faster than Heal and teammate Laura Yoisten to come around in the final turns. The break was initiated early in the race by three, including TEAm Lipton's strong rider Meredith Miller, Tour of Elk Grove winner Rachel Heal (Victory Brewing) and Catherine Powers (Aaron's Corporate Furnishings.) With thirty seconds on the field, Van Gilder decided to bridge with Katharine Carroll and Sarah Caravella joining. These three dangled for a while in the middle until the break realized this would help the numbers. Once the bridge made it, a solo bridge by Laura Yoisten (Victory Brewing) evened the numbers between TEAm Lipton and Victory Brewing. This extended the lead quickly. Into the final laps, TEAm Lipton started attacking right away with Miller starting at four to go. She was brought back and the expected counter-attack came from Katharine Carroll who attacked at 2 to go. But it was all together on the final lap when Heal attacked on the well-known hill on the back side of the course with only Van Gilder and Yoisten following. Sarah Uhl (Serotta-Home Depot) brought the field in for eight place.
