43rd Tour de l'Avenir - 2.1France, August 31-September 9, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 2 - September 1: Charleroi - Mont-Saint-Martin, 180.5 kmThe birth of a champion: Edvald Boasson HagenBy Jean-François Quénet in Mont-Saint-Martin Thor Hushovd and Kurt-Asle Arvesen might not feel alone anymore in the international peloton: their compatriot Edvald Boasson Hagen will probably join them at the highest level soon. Aged 19, he has won stage 2 of the Tour de l'Avenir finishing uphill in Mont-Saint-Martin on the French-Belgian border. He resisted the return of the whole pack where a split created a 15 seconds gap between Mickaël Delage and his Française des Jeux team-mate Cyrille Monnerais, who is the new yellow jersey. After crossing the line, Christopher Myhre from the Norwegian national team shouted: "Hey, he's only 19!" Boasson Hagen was a junior last year but it didn't take him long before he became successful in the elite ranks as well. Earlier this year he won a stage in the Rhône-Alpes Isère Tour where he was the best young rider, he won two stages at the Thüringen Rundfahrt and one more stage plus the young rider classification also in the Ringerike Grand Prix, the only UCI sanctioned event in his country. Boasson Hagen hails from Lillehammer where there were the winter Olympics in 1994. He rides for the team Maxbo Bianchi put together by the long term promoter of Norwegian cycling Birger Hungerholdt. Their team captain Gabriel Rasch must have done a good job teaching the young one how to win a race. "This is by far my biggest win, it was a very hard finish", Boasson Hagen said. He's aware that Crédit Agricole, CSC, Rabobank and Quick Step have already expressed their interest in him for the future. His plan is to stay for one more year with Team Maxbo Bianchi and move on afterwards. He was disappointed that he had missed the right break on stage 1. But something new happens at the Tour de l'Avenir every day. Carl Naibo of AG2R who seemed to be the hot favourite for GC after stage 1 finished at the back of the bunch today, apparently suffering tendonitis. For now, the race leader is Monnerais. "It's important that the yellow jersey stays in our house," the Breton rider explained. But Française des Jeux isn't very keen to defend that lead. It's widely open to new riders courageous enough to take their chance as Boasson Hagen did. How it unfoldedThere were many attacks at the beginning of stage, leaving Charleroi and heading south through the Belgian Ardennes. Coming close to the first hot spot sprint at km 51, 12 riders broke clear: Ben Johnson (Agritubel), Lloyd Mondory (Ag2r), Lars Boom (Rabobank), Nicolas Roche (Cofidis), Kurt Hovelynck (Chocolade Jacques), Yohan Gène and Vincent Jérôme (Bouygues Telecom), Mathieu Ladagnous (Française des Jeux), Grégory Habeaux (Landbouwkrediet), Edvald Boasson Hagen (Norway), Ivan Melero (Orbea) and Antonio Cosme (Viña Magna). They quickly got a gap of 7 minutes. At km 105, five of the breakaway riders took off: Boom, Roche, Hovelynck, Jérôme and Boasson Hagen. FDJ, the team of the yellow jersey, started chasing with 60km to go. Auber 93, Agritubel and Orbea eventually gave them a hand. Roche was the most active in the front during the last 20km. Boasson Hagen counter-attacked him with 5km to go. He never had more than 25 seconds and the peloton was coming very close at the end. The young Norwegian managed to keep the win with the whole bunch on his wheel while his former companions were captured. Cyrille Monnerais came 6th and took the lead over from Mickaël Delage.
